Subject: Gay TV Shows 2/24/96 - 3/1/96

Hi, folks! This is note #1 (of 6) of the list of tv shows
with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight
AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 2/24/96 - Fri 3/1/96.
Be sure to read all 6 notes. Local shows are listed with
local times; national shows are Eastern time zone.

********************************************************

The following shows air at multiple/various times:

- IN THE LIFE. Quarterly lesbian & gay newsmagazine.
WYBE's program guide says: "Celebrating Black History
Month, IN THE LIFE investigates current conditions of gays
and lesbians in South Africa and how black men are finding
their own community in Harlem. Also covered in the show:
gay presence on the Internet and the Mautner Project for
lesbians with cancer." Upcoming airings include (but
aren't limited to) the following:
> Miami, FL: Thurs. 2/29/96, 10:00 pm, WLRN ch. 17
> Phila. PA: Sat. 2/24/96, 8:00 pm, WYBE ch. 35
> San Mateo, CA: Fri. 3/1/96, 9:00 pm, KCSM ch. 60
> Tacoma, WA: Thurs. 2/29/96, 11:00 pm, KBTC ch. 28

- TONY BROWN'S JOURNAL. TV Guide says: "The discussion
centers on affirmative action, economic empowerment in the
black community, and AIDS. Part 2 of the Ford Hall
Forum." Airs this weekend on most PBS stations, so check
local listings. Airings include, but aren't limited to:
> Sat. 2/24/96, 11:00 am, on NYC NY WNET ch. 13
> Sat. 2/24/96, 4:00 pm, on Allentown PA WLVT ch. 39A

- ZORRO, THE GAY BLADE. Stereotypical but very funny
movie about the twin sons of the masked swordsman, who
take over as Zorro when their father dies. One is
straight. The other is a flaming queen. Picture Zorro in
a lavender tassled hat! Airs:
> Sun. 2/25/96, noon & again at 8:00 pm, Comedy Central

- REALITY BITES. A reader says: "A television intern and
her friends grapple with post-college life in Houston.
The coming-out of one of the friends is a minor subplot."
Airs:
>Sun. 2/25/96, 8:00 pm, STARZ
>Mon. 2/26/96, 4:30 pm, STARZ

- HIGHER LEARNING (CC). TV Guide says "Director John
Singleton's group portrait fixes on the racial and sexual
tensions fragmenting the freshman class of a fictional
college." I missed this movie when it hit my local
theaters all too briefly, but I recall reading that it had
one or more gay characters. Airs:
> Sun. 2/25/96, 9:45 pm, HBO
> Wed. 2/28/96, 11:00 pm, HBO

- BLACK IS, BLACK AIN'T (CC). WHYY's program guide
APPLAUSE says: "An upfront examination of racism, sexism,
and homophobia within the black community; the program
asks the question, 'What is black, black enough or too
black?'" The description doesn't begin to do justice to
this extraordinary film. This is gay African-American
filmmaker/poet Marlon Riggs' final film. (He died of AIDS
during the movie's production, which is also addressed in
the movie.) The show is as visually stunning as Riggs'
superb "Tongues Untied," with the same powerful editing
techniques. Highly recommended. Airs:
> Sat. 2/24/96, 11:00 pm, on Tampa FL WEDU ch. 3
> Sun. 2/25/96, 10:00 pm, on New York City's WNET ch. 13
> Tues-Wed. 2/27-28/96, midnight, NYC WNET ch. 13
> Probably airs on other PBS stations as well. Check
local listings.

cable. Movie about a person who lives 400 years and

boring movie. You've been warned.

for people with AIDS and HIV disease.
