says: "A profile of the civil and labor-rights pioneer
(1889-1979), whose activism on behalf of equality for
black Americans 'sets the agenda for the modern civil-
rights movement.' The program traces the roots of his
socialism, from his interest in radical politics while
living in Harlem to his involvement with unions." A reader
notes that this show also talks about Bayard Rustin, and
the controversy caused by Rustin's open gayness. Airs:
> Tues. 2/13/95, 8:00 pm, on Tacoma WA KBTC ch. 28 and
Centralia (WA? OR?) KCKA ch. 15

- LA CAGE AUX FOLLES #1 & #2. La Cage #1 is a wonderfully
funny '78 movie about what happens when the adult son of a
gay male couple (Ugo Tognazzi, Michel Serrault) plans to
marry the daughter of a right-wing ultra-conservative
French politician. #2 is a pretty disappointing sequel.
Look for the USA remake of La Cage, starring Robin

The following shows air once this week as far as I know:

- AMERICA UNDERCOVER: TAXICAB CONFESSIONS (CC). Airs

The customers & cabbies include g/l/bi/transgender folk.

- READY TO WEAR (PRET-A-PORTER). Airs Sun. 2/11/96, 10:00
pm, STARZ. A reader says: "The sparcity of gay characters
in a film about the fashion industry strains either

Forrest Whittaker [The Crying Game] as a clothing designer
whose lover is cheating on him - with a woman. There's an
unexpected transvestite, played by..."

- MELROSE PLACE (CC). Airs Mon. 2/12/96, 8:00 pm, FOX.

Guide says "A strapping he-man sweeps Ellie off her feet
and takes her mind off an archrival who has come sniffing
around Emerson for a new publishing contract. Chuck: Tom
Arnold." However, the CBS ad for this show says this:
"The man of Ellie's dreams turns out to be the woman of
her nightmares. Guest: Tom Arnold." Same guest, so....

- CHICAGO HOPE (CC). Airs Mon. 2/12/96, 10:00 pm, CBS.
TV Guide says: "An old friend (Mia Sara) of Kronk's sees
his advice on a health problem she thinks resulted from

Hi, folks! This is note #5 (of 7) of the list of tv shows

AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 2/10/96 - Fri 2/16/96.

*************** CONTINUED FROM NOTE #4 ******************

- ROSIE O'DONNELL (CC). Airs Tues.-Wed. 2/13-14/96, 2:15
am, HBO. If this is the show I think, Rosie talks about
anti-gay violence. This show was filmed shortly after a
homophobe killed a gay man after they had both appeared on
a Jenny Jones show.

- LOUIE (CC). Airs Wed. 2/14/96, 8:30 pm, CBS. TV Guide
says: "When Louie tells Eddie (Matt Landers) how bad his
toupee looks, he removes it, and finds the experience so
liberating he decides to reveal another aspect of himself:
his love of women's clothing."

- THE SOAP OPERA AWARDS. Airs Wed. 2/14/96, 9:00 pm, NBC.
It may be interesting to watch this and see if any of the
AIDS-related or gay story lines/performances attracts
attention at the awards.

- ORLANDO (CC). Airs Thurs. 2/15/96, 4:15 pm, Showtime
cable. Movie based on Virginia Woolfe's story of a person
who lives for 400 years and manages to change genders
several times without the benefit of surgery. Despite the
intriguing premise, I thought this was an INCREDIBLY
boring movie. One reader disagrees with that assessment,
but I stand by it. You've been warned.

- REAL WORLD. Airs Thurs. 2/15/96, 9:30 pm, MTV. Rerun
of the episode in which the San Francisco roommates move
in together. Look for gay roommate Pedro (who later died
of AIDS).

- COMMUNITY FORUM: OUT OF THE CLOSET. Airs in Phila. PA
on Thurs. 2/15/96, 9:30 pm, WYBE ch. 35. Monthly show by
& for our local g/l/b/t communities, with specific focus
on our communities of color. Topic unknown.

- VICTOR/VICTORIA. Airs Thurs. 2/15/96, 10:05 pm, TNT.
Wonderful musical comedy about a light opera singer (Julie
Andrews) in 1930s Paris. When she loses her job, she
pretends to be a gay male drag queen. Robert Preston is
great as her best friend, a gay man named Toddy. James
Garner & Alex Karras costar as their respective lovers.
Highly recommended.

- THE INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURES OF TWO GIRLS IN LOVE.
Romance about an interracial lesbian teen couple. Funny,
warm, and thoroughly wonderful. Airing on pay-per-view on
Direct Broadcast Satellite (and probably elsewhere),
starting on Fri. 2/16/96. Check your listings for times.

- DATELINE NBC #2 (CC). Airs Fri. 2/16/96, 9:00 pm, NBC.
TV Guide says "Scheduled: Jane Pauley interviews Aileen
Getty, heiress to the Getty oil fortune, who was diagnosed
with HIV in 1985 and now devotes time to AIDS-related
causes. Among the topics Getty is scheduled to discuss:
growing up wealthy; her illness."

racist, and homophobic harassment, the entire community
acted with solidarity and class. An inspiring story.
