- IN THE LIFE. Quarterly lesbian & gay newsmagazine.
WYBE's program guide says: "Celebrating Black History
Month, IN THE LIFE investigates current conditions of gays
and lesbians in South Africa and how black men are finding
their own community in Harlem. Also covered in the show:
gay presence on the Internet and the Mautner Project for
lesbians with cancer." My IN THE LIFE program guide
hasn't arrived yet, but this show should air this week in
many areas. Check your local PBS & public access stations.
Upcoming airings include but are NOT limited to:
> Mon. 2/5/96, 11:00 pm, on Phila. PA WHYY ch. 12
> Fri. 2/9/96, 9:00 pm, on Phila. PA WYBE ch. 35
> Next Sat.-Sun. 2/10-11/96, 12:30 am, on Tampa WEDU ch. 3
> Next Wed. 2/14/96, 11:00 pm, on San Francisco KQED ch. 9

- THE PRIVATE FILES OF J. EDGAR HOOVER. TV Guide
describes this 1977 film starring Broderick Crawford as a
"sensationalistic look at the FBI chief's career." Given
the production year, however, it probably doesn't get into
his personal life at all.... Airs:
> Mon. 2/5/96, 11:00 pm, Encore cable
> Tues. 2/6/96, 6:15 am and 4:45 pm, Encore cable

- CHEERS (CC). "Rebecca's high-school sweetheart (Harvey
Fierstein) gets her motor running again, but he's chosen a
different road."-TV Guide This great episode should air
in most areas in daily syndicated reruns. Airs:
> Tues. 2/6/96, 11:00 pm, on Phila. PA WTXF ch. 29

- MAURY POVICH: FEMALE IMPERSONATORS (CC). Airs Thurs.

- ORLANDO (CC). Movie based on Virginia Woolfe's story of
a person who lives for 400 years and manages to change
genders several times without the benefit of surgery.
Despite the intriguing premise, I thought this was an
INCREDIBLY boring movie. One reader disagrees with that
assessment, but I stand by it. You've been warned. Airs:
> Fri. 2/9/96, 10:30 am & again at 6:15 pm, Showtime cable

The following shows air once this week as far as I know:

- PHILADELPHIA (CC). Airs Sat. 2/3/96, 8:00 pm, Showtime
cable. Tom Hanks won an Oscar for his portrayal of a gay
lawyer who develops AIDS and is fired when his gayness
becomes known. Denzel Washington is his homophobic
attorney. The Flirtations also perform briefly.

- A CHORUS LINE(CC). Airs Sat.-Sun. 2/3-4/96, 4:30 am,
Cinemax-2. This film based on the Broadway show has two
gay characters, not just the one I mentioned last week.

clothing designer whose lover is cheating on him - with a
woman. There's an unexpected transvestite,
