Hi, folks! This is note #1 (of 6) of the list of tv shows

AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 1/13/96 - Fri 1/19/96.
Be sure to read all 6 notes. Local shows are listed with
local times; national shows are Eastern time zone.

- POSITIVE: LIFE WITH HIV. This new series was produced
by AIDS Films for the Independent Television Service
(ITVS). A press release says: "POSITIVE: LIFE WITH HIV is
a limited series of four one-hour programs that provides a
forum for sharing the achievements, frustrations,
aspirations, and successes of those who are affected
and/or infected by AIDS." WHYY's APPLAUSE guide says:

affect people living with HIV and AIDS. How does race,
class and gender influence diagnosis, care and treatment?"
#2. Identity: "...explores the issues of identity and
lifestyle, including a candid look at sex and sexuality
among those affected and infected by HIV."
#3. Care. "This segment takes a look at the American
health-care system and how it is dealing with the
overwhelming demands of this epidemic."

- YOU DON'T HAVE TO RIDE JIM CROW. WHYY's Applause
magazine says "Documents the story of the 1947 'journey of

mentioned in this show, but Bayard Rustin was gay.) Airs

- VISIONARIES. "Profiling Sister Mary Annel, a physician
who's worked in AIDS education and prevention."-TV Guide
Airs:
> Thurs. 1/18/96, 7:00 pm, on New Jersey Network public tv
stations (incl. Camden WNJS ch. 23, Trenton WNJT ch. 52,
and WNJM Channel 50 in northern NJ).
> May air on other PBS stations. Check local listings.

- SOUTH BANK SHOW. The scheduled guest is gay British
actor Sir Ian McKellen. Airs:
> Thurs. 1/18/96, 10:00 pm, Bravo cable
> Thurs.-Fri. 1/18-19/96, 3:20 am, Bravo

- ROSEANNE (CC). TV Guide says "Florence Henderson plays
a businesswoman with whom Roseanne hopes to establish
useful contacts." This episode featured Sandra Bernhard
as Roseanne's lesbian friend Nancy, and she makes several
gay comments. Airs this week (probably Friday 1/19/96) in
daily syndicated reruns in many areas; check local
listings. Airings include:
> Fri. 1/19/96, 6:30 pm, on NYC NY WNYW ch. 5

The following shows air once this week as far as I know:

- ORLANDO (CC). Airs Sat. 1/13/96, 5:05 pm, The Movie
Channel. This movie is about a person who lives for 400
years and manages to change genders several times, without
the benefit of surgery. Despite the intriguing premise,
this is an INCREDIBLY boring movie. You've been warned.

- TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL (CC). Airs Sat. 1/13/96, 9:00 pm,
CBS. This one is a guess. No promises on gay content.
TV Guide says "Monica (Roma Downey) poses as a visiting
nurse for an ailing man (Harvey Vernon) whose three
children return home for his final hours. During their
visit, a surprising family secret about one of his two
daughters (Joan Van Ark) is revealed." There's no
indication of the nature of the secret, but networks often
use this kind of language to suggest gay storylines.

- CITY OF HOPE. Airs in NYC on Sun. 1/14/96, 11:55 pm, on
WABC ch. 7. Dark film about political corruption in a NJ
town. One of the many plot lines is about a man who is
falsely reported to have made passes at young men.

- THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK. Airs Mon.-Tues. 1/15-16/96,
midnight, Independent Film Channel (IFC). Documentary
about the gay San Francisco politician, who was
assassinated.

- FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL (CC). Airs Mon.-Tues.

column have highly praised this film's portrayal of a gay
male couple.

- A CHORUS LINE (CC). Airs Tues. 1/16/96, 3:00 pm,
Cinemax. This musical film based on the Broadway show
features a gay character.

1/18/96, 8:30 pm, on WLVT ch. 39A. Excellent & inspiring
documentary about how the residents of Billings, Montana

crimes in their community. Highly recommended.

Gay tv notes:

1. Check out the notes on pg. 10 (in Cheers & Jeers) and
pg. 18 (re: Morgan Fairchild) of this week's TV Guide,
about gay Roseanne stories. Example: When discussing the
gay wedding that aired last month, TVG says: "Our fave
touch: June Lockhart as the perplexed mother of groom Leon
(Martin Mull). After playing mom to Lassie's Timmy and
Lost in Space's Will, we're glad June finally got someone
normal for a son."

2. Several people wrote that last week's MAD ABOUT YOU
featured an unadvertised lesbian theme. Paul's sister
came out as a lesbian & told Paul, Jamie, and her parents
that she's in love with another woman. Unknown if there
will be any continuation on this story, but MAD ABOUT YOU
airs this week on Sun. at 8:00 pm and again on Thurs. at
9:30 pm, on NBC.

3. A reader reports that "MTV has announced that lesbians
and gays will be included in at least one episode of the
network's dating game show Singled Out." No air date yet.

8:00 pm, on WPSG ch. 57. Extremely moving (but
fictionalized) story about the 1955 Montgomery AL bus
boycott. Whoopi Goldberg & Sissy Spacek co-star.

- GLORY. "Stirring tribute to the Army's first black
regiment, mustered up during the Civil War under the
command of an inexperienced New Englander (Matthew
Broderick). Denzel Washington won an Oscar for Best
Supporting Actor."-TV Guide Airs:
