It is incidental to the plot, but one of the 2 US Supreme Court justices who are killed at the beginning of this movie turns out to have been a closeted gay man. Some areas will have syndicated reruns of the episode in which Riker becomes involved with an androgynous being from a planet that frowns on heterosexual couples. Very stereotypical but also very funny movie about the twin sons of the legendary swordsman, who take over as Zorro when their father dies. One is straight, and the other is a flaming queen. (Picture Zorro in a lavender tassled hat!) Airs Sat. 12/23/95, 8:00 pm, Showtime cable. Hysterical 1994 movie about Edward D. Wood Jr., a 1950s film director who created such classics as the transgender exploration "Glen or Glenda?" and the schlock cult sci-fi film "Plan 9 from Outer Space". Wood (Johnny Depp) was a straight man who usually directed films while dressed in his wife's clothes; his friends included gay & transgender individuals. Martin Landau gives a superb (& Oscar winning) performance as Bela Lugosi, and Bill Murray plays Bunny Breckinbridge (sp?). Highly recommended. - TINSELTOWN'S QUEER. Airs in the Los Angeles area weekly on Saturdays at 11:00 pm local time, on Continental Cablevision (L.A. region) ch. 28 & United Artists Cable ch. 46. L.A. readers take note; I won't list this again. - THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT. Airs Sun. 12/24/95, 4:15 pm, The Movie Channel. TV Guide calls this a "Delightfully campy account of three transvestites' offbeat escapades as they traverse the Australian outback in their ramshackle bus, 'Priscilla'." According to a reader, however, the movie is "actually about two transvestites and a transsexual." (Thanks JJ.) - SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION. Airs Sun. 12/24/95, 11:35 pm, The Movie Channel. Allegedly fact-based story about a gay con man (Will Smith). Donald Sutherland, Stockard Channing, and Sir Ian McKellen co-star. - THE COLOR PURPLE (CC). Airs Mon. 12/25/95, 2:00 pm, Lifetime cable. Steven Spielberg directed this movie based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer winning novel. The book's lesbian relationship between Shug & Celie is hardly hinted at in the movie, but it is still a good film. The readers of this column have loved this movie's great portrayal of a gay male couple. - LIVE SHOT (CC). May air on Tues. 12/26/95 on some UPN channels. Time unknown; check your local listings. This show has officially been cancelled, but last week's episode had a preview for this week, and this week's episode was supposed to be the one about a gay athlete who comes out. At the end, the sportscaster was revealed to be gay as well. I don't know if it will really air or not. (It does NOT seem to be on the Phila. PA schedule.) - VITAL SIGNS: THE OPPOSITE SEX. Described as "an excellent series" on sexuality. > Pt. 4: Airs Tues. 12/26/95, 10:00 pm ET, on CICO TV Ontario, seen in the Detroit area on cable & UHF ch. 32. - INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE (CC). Airs Tues. 12/26/95, 11:00 pm, HBO. Although it is based on a gay book, this movie didn't strike me as gay. However, I'm listing the film because many readers of this column feel it IS gay. - CHANTILLY LACE. Airs Tues.-Wed., 12/26-27/95, 3:15 am, Showtime cable. Mostly-improvised movie about a group of women who get together for a reunion at a remote cabin. During the weekend, two of the women reveal that they are a couple. The film is well-intentioned, but the improvised performances are uneven. - LIFESTORIES: BLOOD BROTHERS - THE JOEY DiPAOLO STORY (CC). Airs Wed. 12/27/95, 4:00 pm, HBO. HBO's online description (from Prodigy) says: "Parents are encouraged to join their children in watching this true story of a courageous 11-year-old who tells the world he has AIDS." - GREETINGS FROM OUT HERE. TV Guide says: "The promotion that Jess expected goes instead to Paul (David Burke), who's the one in charge when a passenger develops a medical emergency in flight." The gay a cappella group The Flirtations also appear & perform in one scene. - M. BUTTERFLY (CC). Airs Thurs.-Fri. 12/28-29/95, 1:30 am, Prism. TV Guide says: "Adaptation of David Henry Hwang's Tony-winning play about the deceptive love affair between a French diplomat (Jeremy Irons) and a Chinese opera singer." What they don't say is that the opera singer turns out to be a man in drag. - OUR WORLD TELEVISION/PRIDE TVx. Steven W. writes that gay tv programming airs in San Diego CA every week on Fridays at 11:00 pm on Cox Cable ch. 24. The program titles rotate among several: PRIDE TVx, OUR WORLD TELEVISIONx, ARTBEAT!, ONE IN 10 PEOPLEx, and MOMENTUM TVx, but he says that all are gay shows.
