Subject: Gay TV 7/22/95 - 7/28/95

Hi, folks! This is note #1 (of 4) of the list of tv shows
with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight
AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 7/22/95-Fri. 7/28/95.
Be sure to read all 4 notes. Local shows are listed with
local times; national shows are Eastern time zone.

**********************************************************

The following shows air at multiple/various times:

>> THE STATE. A reader wrote: "A show you might want to
add to your listings: MTV's sketch comedy show 'The
State.' One of the eleven cast members, Kevin Allison
(he's the only male with red hair) is openly gay. While
the gay content of episodes isn't nearly as high as, say,
Kids in the Hall, there is some, plus lots of
crossdressing (as the cast features only one woman). It's
kind of silly and aimed at the MTV crowd...but is
occasionally hysterical." (Thanks for the info, Alan.)
Note: This is one of those MTV shows that airs A LOT, so
I won't list it every week. Look for it if you are
interested, but this week's show times include:
- Sat. 7/22/95, 7:00 pm & 11:00 pm, MTV
- Sun. 7/23/95, 8:30 pm & 11:30 pm, MTV
- Fri. 7/28/95, 10:00 pm, MTV

>> NETWORK Q. New weekly gay tv program. Airs:

>> SOAPDISH (CC). Parody of tv soap operas. One of the
many villians is transgendered. Airs:
- Sun. 7/23/95, 12:45 pm, HBO
- Wed. 7/26/95, 9:00 am, HBO

>> AND THE BAND PLAYED ON (CC). Great HBO adaptation of
Randy Shilts' superb book about the early years of the
AIDS epidemic. HIGHLY recommended! The all-star cast
includes Sir Ian McKellen, Lily Tomlin, Alan Alda, Matthew
Modine, Richard Gere, Anjelica Huston, Phil Collins, and
Steve Martin. Airs:
- Mon. 7/24/95, 1:30 pm, HBO
- Fri. 7/28/95, 5:30 pm, HBO

>> RICHARD BEY. According to TV Guide, this talk show has
two topics of likely interest this week:
1) "HOMOSEXUALITY." Airs in some (not all) areas on Tues.
7/25/95. Check local listings. Airings include:
- Tues. 7/25/95, 11:00 am, Phila. PA WGBS ch. 57
- Tues. 7/25/95, 4:00 pm, WWOR national cable ch. 9
2) "DISAPPROVING OF A TEENAGE DAUGHTER'S LIFESTYLE." No
promsies on this one, but "lifestyle" is a frequent TV
listing euphemism for gayness. Airs Wed. 7/26/95 in some
areas, including:
- Wed. 7/26/95, 11:00 am, WWOR national cable ch. 9

>> CHARLES PEREZ: A DISCUSSION OF WHETHER HIV-POSITIVE
COUPLES SHOULD CONCEIVE CHILDREN. This aired last week in

enough to give it that 'I-buy-it-for-the-articles' sort of
acceptibility." Elsewhere, TV Guide says: "Judith's best
friend (Annette O'Toole) from college, who Martin
considers 'the one that got away' visits - and brings
