>> FREESTYLES. A reader called my attention to this new
show, which stars openly lesbian Amanda Bearse. It is
billed in an ad in this week's TV Guide (pg. 95 in my
edition, but the page # will vary in local issues) as "A
show about freedom...with style." According to the ad,
the "Premiere Episode" show airs "as paid advertising" on:
- "Sun. 7/16/95", 3:30 am EST, VH-1
- "Sun. 7/23/95", 3:30 am, EST, VH-1
IMPORTANT NOTE: The ad doesn't make it clear if these
shows are airing Sat night/Sun morning, or Sun. night/Mon.
morning. TV Guide's usual practice differs from the rest
of society, so it may be either. Be warned.

>> DONAHUE: HOMOSEXUALITY AMONG MARRIED COUPLES (CC).
Airs on Mon. 7/17 in most (not all) areas. May air Tues.
7/18 or Mon. 7/24 in other areas. Check local listings.

- Mon. 7/17/95, 4:00 pm, NYC NY WNBC ch. 4

guarantees, but this sounds like there may be gay content.

- Tues. 7/18/95, 5:00 pm, Phila. PA WPHL ch. 17

>> SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION. Will Smith stars as a gay
con man. Airs:

>> M. BUTTERFLY (CC). "Adaptation of David Henry Hwang's
Tony-winning play about the deceptive love affair between
a French diplomat (Jeremy Irons) and a Chinese opera
singer." The opera singer turns out to be a man in drag.
Supposed to be based on a true story. Airs:
- Wed. 7/19/95, 1:00 pm and again at 11:00 pm, Prism

>> GERALDO: LEAVING A RELATIONSHIP FOR ANOTHER WOMAN.
Again, no guarantees. This is probably about MEN who
leave one woman for another, but ya never know. Airs:
- Wed. 7/19/95, 4:00 pm, on NYC NY WCBS ch. 2 and also
Phila. PA WCAU ch. 10. May air on all CBS stations (not
sure if this is a network show or syndicated).

>> DOING TIME ON MAPLE DRIVE. Airs Sat. 7/15/95, 3:30 pm,
Lifetime cable. 1992 movie about a family coping with a

Fox stations, including Phila. PA WTXF ch. 29. TV Guide
says: "Homer receives a promotion, a key to the executive
washroom, and an invaluable secretary (voice of Harvey
Fierstein)."

>> THE COLOR PURPLE (CC). Airs Sat. 7/15/95, 7:30 pm,
Lifetime cable. Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Alice
Walker's novel. The book's lesbian relationship between
two of the main characters, Celie and Shug, is barely
suggested here, but it is still a well-done movie.

>> PHILA. PA WYBE'S "THROUGH THE LENS 5" FILM FESTIVAL:
"GREETINGS FROM AFRICA". This 8-minute short film airs
Sat. 7/15/95, approx. 8:00 pm, on Phila. PA WYBE ch. 35.
WYBE's film festival guide said: "In this highly
entertaining short, Cheryl Dunye plays herself searching
for someone to date. Unfortunately, most of her friends
are still stuck in those long-term 'relationships from the
'80s.' Just when she thinks all is lost, she meets L., a
mysterious and captivating woman. Cheryl gets caught up
in the chase and L. leads her in and out of hot water."

>> ONE AND ONLY BARRY GOLDWATER. Airs Sat. 7/15/95, 9:00
pm, C-Span. Profile and panel discussion about the ex-
senator from Arizona (& Republican 1964 presidental
candidate). Although Goldwater is straight and a strong
Republican conservative, he has been attacked a lot for
his strong support of gays and lesbians who serve in the
military. His very public stance on this issue seems
likely to be discussed, but no promises.

>> ORLANDO (CC). Airs Sun. 7/16/95, 12:15 pm, The Movie
Channel cable. TV Guide says: "Visually striking
adaptation of Virginia Woolf's historical fantasy about an

(including 7/18/95) at 7:30 pm, on WYBE ch. 35. Locally
produced show by and for PWAs and people who are HIV+.

>> AND THE BAND PLAYED ON (CC). Airs Wed. 7/19/95, 4:00
pm, HBO. Great HBO adaptation of Randy Shilts' superb
book about the early years of the AIDS epidemic. HIGHLY
recommended! The all-star cast includes Sir Ian McKellen,
Lily Tomlin, Alan Alda, Matthew Modine, Richard Gere,
Anjelica Huston, Phil Collins, and Steve Martin.

>> ROSEANNE (CC). Airs Wed. 7/19/95, 9:30 pm, ABC. "Leon

with the Lunch Box clan and a bevy of his gay friends,
many of whom seem to know Fred - intimately." -TV Guide

>> LARRY SANDERS SHOW (CC). Airs Wed. 7/19/95, 10:30 pm,
HBO. This is the season opener. Look for new cast member
Scott Thompson (the openly gay actor from the KIDS IN THE
HALL series). He will play Hank Kingsley's gay assistant
this season.

>> VICTOR/VICTORIA. Airs Wed. 7/19/95, 10:50 pm, TBS
cable. One of my alll-time favorite movies; very funny
and some wonderful music. Julie Andrews plays an out of
work light opera singer who finds fame and fortune
pretending to be a a gay male ("Victor") who impersonates
a woman ("Vicotoria"). Robert Preston is a gay friend who
pretends to be her lover. James Garner and Alex Karras
co-star as her lover, and her lover's gay bodyguard. If
you've never seen this one, you're missing out big-time!

>> ELEANOR, FIRST LADY OF THE WORLD. Airs Wed.-Thurs.,

probably NOT cover her reported relationship with Lorena
Hikock.

"Elaine tries to change a gay's preferences."-TV Guide

>> MEDUSA: DARE TO BE TRUTHFUL. Airs Thurs. 7/20/95, 9:00
pm, Comedy Central. I've never seen this parody of the
MADONNA: TRUTH OR DARE movie, but I've been told that it
also parodies the gay content in Madonna's movie.

>> COMMUNITY FORUM: OUT OF THE CLOSET. Airs in Phila. PA
on Thurs. 7/20/95, 9:30 pm, on WYBE ch. 35. Local monthly
discussion show on lesbian/gay/bi/transgender issues, with

7/20-21/95, 3:50 am, HBO. Stand up comedy from the out
lesbian comic.

********************************************************

That's it for this week's tv shows, but a few notes:

1) This week's TV Guide says that CBS will soon introduce
a new series called Courthouse which stars Robin Givens
and Jeffrey Sams. The article says that it "features a
leading character in a lesbian relationship". It will air
on Wednesdays at 10pm. Debut date is unknown.

2) In the "all isms are related" category, NBC News is
devoting a week of programming to race issues and racism
beginning July 23. (also from TV Guide, pg. 34)

3) Denver residents should check out KBDI's programming on
Thursday nights as well as Fridays. A resident told me
that they sometimes air The Lambda Report at 10:30 pm
Thursdays; and Dyke TV and "Q" on alternate weeks at 11:00
pm on Thursdays.

4) Troy, NY area readers may want to check out "Homo
Radio" on Troy NY's 91.5 FM station on Sundays from noon
to 2:00 pm local time each week.

5) I think that's it for this week, but a couple of my
files got trashed before I got to print them due to a PC
crash. If you sent me info on a show that isn't listed
above, my apologies.
