Subject: Gay TV Shows 6/10-16/95

Hi, folks! This is note #1 (of 4) of the list of tv shows
with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight
AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 6/17/95 - Fri 6/16/95.
Be sure to read notes #2-4 also. Most times are Eastern.

*********** HAPPY GAY PRIDE MONTH, FOLKS! **************

Beware of pledge breaks on some PBS stations this week.

The following shows air at multiple/various times:

>> THINK POSITIVE. Last week's TV Guide said this "AIDS-
awareness benefit salutes New York City AIDS agencies".
Airs:
- Sat. 6/10/95, noon and 8:00 pm, VH-1
- Sun. 6/11/95, 10:00 am, VH-1
- Mon. 6/12/95, 3:00 pm, VH-1

>> JUST ONE OF THE GUYS (CC). Comedy about a teen woman
(Joyce Hyser) who poses as a male and enrolls in another
high school, to research a newspaper article about sexism.
When she falls for her male best friend at the new school,
the other students assume that "he" is a gay male. Airs:
- Sat. 6/10/95, 4:00 pm, Cinemax
- Thurs. 6/15/95, 9:15 am, Cinemax

>> THE PELICAN BRIEF (CC). It's incidental to the plot,
but one of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices who gets killed
in this movie turns out to have been a closeted gay man.
Airs:
- Sun. 6/11/95, 1:00 pm, HBO
- Thurs. 6/15/95, 2:15 pm, HBO

>> ELTON JOHN (CC). 1994 concert from Los Angeles. Airs:
- Sun. 6/11/95, 9:00 pm, Disney
- Sun-Mon., 6/11-12/95, 3:15 am, Disney

>> THE CHILDREN'S HOUR. Faithful (and therefore pretty
depressing) 1962 adaptation of Lillian Hellman's play
about two women who run a girls' school in a small town.
One of their students lies and says that the women are
lovers, and the whole turn turns against them in a vile
display of mass homophobia. Warning: This has a very
upsetting ending. Airs:
- Mon. 6/12/95, 11:00 pm, Encore cable (NOT CC)
- Tues. 6/13/95, 9:45 am, Encore (NOT CC)
- Tues. 6/13/95, 11:10 am, Cinemax (CC)
- Thurs. 6/15/95, 12:35 pm, Showtime (CC)

>> ELEANOR, FIRST LADY OF THE WORLD. This 1982 biography
of Eleanor Roosevelt will probably NOT discuss her
relationship with journalist Lorena Hickok. Airs:
- Tues. 6/13/95, 9:00 pm, Disney
- Tues.-Wed., 6/13-14/95, 2:30 am, Disney

Hi, folks! This is note #2 (of 4) of the list of tv shows
with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight
AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 6/10/95 - Fri 6/16/95.

*************** CONTINUED FROM NOTE #1 ******************

The following shows air once this week as far as I know:

>> WYBE'S THROUGH THE LENS 5. Airs in Phila. PA, on Sat.
6/10/95, starting at 8:00 pm on WYBE ch. 35. According to
WYBE's newsletter, their 5th short film festival has
several shows of interest, including two in this week's
lineup. Among the 6 short films airing in this set are:
FILM #1: FRANKIE & JOCIE: A phone conversation between
two siblings reveals the complex relationships between
brother and sister, male and female, and heterosexuality
and homosexuality. (19 minutes)
FILM #3: TALKING ABOUT THE WEATHER: Two men meet on a
train platform and share a conversation about the
complexities of living in the time of HIV and AIDS and the
impossibility of "living" without risk. (11 minutes)
NOTE: The rest of the films in this set sound interesting,
also. (Some of them MAY have gay content, but I can't be
sure from the descriptions.)

>> SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION. Airs Sun. 6/11/95, 4:25 pm,
The Movie Channel. Will Smith stars as a gay con man.

>> FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL (CC). Airs Sun. 6/11/95,
8:00 pm, The Movie Channel. This movie reportedly has a
gay couple that is positively portrayed.

>> STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (CC). Airs in Phila. PA
on Mon. 6/12/95, 6:00 pm, on WTXF ch. 29. May or may not
air in other areas in syndication, so check your listings.
This is the episode in which Riker gets involved with an
androgynous being, whose planet forbids heterosexual
male/female relationships by law. There is no gayness in
this show, but there are interesting facets to the story.

>> CITIZEN X (CC). Airs Mon. 6/12/95, 8:00 pm, HBO. A
correspondent said that this show examined the former
Soviet Union's governmental stance regarding gayness,
among other things.

>> A PLACE FOR ANNIE (CC). Airs Mon. 6/12/95, 9:00 pm,
ABC. TV Guide says: "(1994) The care of an HIV-infected
infant is shared by two reluctant roommates; the child's
foster mother (Sissy Spacek), a pediatric nurse; and the
birth mother (Mary-Louise Parker), a destitute AIDS
patient. A fact-based teleplay."

>> FORBIDDEN LOVE. Airs Mon. 6/12/95, 9:00 pm local time,
on San Francisco KQED ch. 9. KQED's guide says "Nine
women paint a compelling, often hilarious portrait of
lesbian sexuality against a backdrop of tabloid headlines,
book covers and dramatizations from lesbian pulp novels."

twin sons of the masked swordsman Zorro: one is straight,
