>> ALL IN THE FAMILY. Airs Sat. 2/11/95, 11:00 pm, on
Phila. PA WGBS ch. 57. May or may not air in other areas
during the daily syndicated runs. This is the excellent
show about the lesbian cousin of Edith's who dies and
leaves behind a silver tea set. Archie wants the tea set,
but Edith decides to leave it to the woman's partner.
This was one of the first tv shows that ever dealt with
lesbian characters, and is still one of the all-time best.

>> THE PELICAN BRIEF (CC). Airs Sun. 2/12/95, 11:00 am,
HBO. This 1993 drama stars Julia Roberts and Denzel
Washington as a law student and reporter who team up to
solve the assassinations of 2 US Supreme Court Justices.
It is incidental to the movie, but one of them turns out
to have been a closeted gay man. Based on the John Grisham
novel of the same name.

*************** CONTINUED FROM NOTE #2 ******************

>> SILKWOOD. Airs Sun. 2/12/95, 1:00 pm, Lifetime cable.
Cher gives a good performance as nuclear activist Karen
Silkwood's real-life lesbian housemate.

>> ARTHUR ASHE: CITIZEN OF THE WORLD (CC). Airs Mon.
2/13/95, 7:00 pm, HBO. A profile of the tennis star, who
died of AIDS. Unknown how much of the show deals with his
illness or his public education efforts about the disease.

>> MELROSE PLACE (CC). Airs Mon. 2/13/95, 8:00 pm, Fox.
TV Guide says: "Jo (Daphne Zuniga) takes an incriminating
picture of Matt's friend Det. Rawlings (Tom Schanley) when
she rides in his squad car on a photo assignment." I'm
not sure what that means, or if Matt's gayness will be a
factor in this storyline or "friendship." No promises.

>> MRS. DOUBTFIRE (CC). Airs Mon. 2/13/95, 8:00 pm,
Cinemax. Harvey Fierstein appears as Robin Williams' gay
brother, who along with his lover transform Williams'
straight male character into that of an elderly woman.
(My apologies, but I can't recall the name of the gay
California comic who appears as Fierstein's lover.)

>> SOAPDISH (CC). Airs Tues. 2/14/95, 4:45 pm, HBO.
Parody of tv soap operas. Among the numerous villains is
a transgendered person.

>> DIALOGUE WITH BLACK FILMMAKERS. Airs Wed. 2/15/95,
7:30 pm, Showtime cable. TV Guide says: "Quincy Jones
discusses 1985's 'The Color Purple' with Alex Haley in a
1991 interview." Unknown if they will discuss the fact
that the lesbian aspects of Alice Walker's novel were
omitted from the film adaptation.

>> NORTHERN EXPOSURE (CC). Airs Wed. 2/15/95, 10:00 pm,
CBS. TV Guide says that this episode will focus on
Founders' Day in Cicely. Cicely was founded by a lesbian
couple, Cicely & Roslyn, who were featured in an earlier
time-shifted episode, so flashbacks about them and other
gay-oriented content seems likely. Among the stories, TV
Guide says that "Chris and Maggie find a common bond while
restoring Cicely and Roslyn's antique auto."

>> THE CHILDREN'S HOUR (CC). Airs Thurs. 2/16/95, 3:30
pm, Showtime cable. This is the faithful 1960s adaptation
of Lillian Hellman's play about two teachers whose lives
are ruined when a student lies & tells the town that
they're lovers. The ending is terribly depressing &
homophobic.

>> ER (CC). Airs Thurs. 2/16/95, 10:00 pm, NBC. TV Guide
says "Hathaway and Tagliari consider adopting a Russian
girl (Milana Vayntrub) with AIDS."
