This is a list of TV shows with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight AIDS themes, for the TV week of Saturday, 1/21/95 though Friday, 1/27/95. Based on TV listings for the Phila/NJ/NYC area. Sat >> THE PELICAN BRIEF (CC). Airs Sat 1/21/95, 8:00 pm, HBO. (Free C V Preview: This show will NOT be SCRAMBLED!) This 1993 drama stars Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington as a law student and reporter who team up to solve the assassinations of 2 US Supreme Court Justices. It is incidental to the movie, but one of them turns out to have been a closeted gay man. Based on the John Grisham novel of the same name. Sun >> THE CHILDREN'S HOUR. Airs Sun 1/22/95, 7:45 am, (NOT pm!) Encore $ V cable. This is the 1962 movie adaptation of Lillian Hellman's play of the same name. Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine play school teachers who run a private school for girls in a small town. When one of their young students gets angry at them, she lies and tells her parents that they are lesbian lovers. Almost overnight, the town goes into revolt and outrage. The students are yanked from the school and the women's lives are ruined. And if that isn't bad enough, one of the women turns out to be a closeted lesbian who has never told anyone her big secret. She can't cope, and at the end of the movie she hangs herself. This is a very well written and filmed movie, but terribly depressing. Sun >> DOING TIME ON MAPLE DRIVE. Tom Hanks won an Oscar for his role as a closeted gay lawyer who develops AIDS, is fired from his job, & sues his law firm for discrimination while simultaneously dealing with his rapidly advancing illness. Denzel Washington co-stars as a homophobic attorney who reluctantly represents Hanks, and who winds up re-evaluating his fears and opinions about gays in the process. Antonio Banderas heads up a superb supporting cast, playing Hanks' life partner. The movie also features a brief performance by the terrific gay male a cappella group, The Flirtations, including Michael Callen, who died of AIDS after the movie was filmed. (But believe it or not, the Flirts' song was NOT included in the movie's released soundtrack!) Fri >> RICKI LAKE: HOMOSEXUALITY. Airs Fri 1/27/95, 10:30 am, L Philadelphia PA WPVI ch 6. Barbra Streisand is executive-producing this long-awaited show, which will reportedly include a lesbian kiss. >> BOYS ON THE SIDE. Also, look for a new Whoopi Goldberg movie that is scheduled to hit theaters on 2/3/95. Despite the obnoxious title, Whoopi's character is supposed to be a lesbian. The Indigo Girls also appear. That's it for this week's listing, folks. Happy viewing. The newspaper movie section reports, "Higher Learning looks at three college students forced to deal with issues like campus diversity, racism, sexism, and homophobia."
