>> THE CHILDREN'S HOUR. This is the 1962 movie adaptation
of Lillian Hellman's play of the same name. Audrey
Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine play school teachers who run
a private school for girls in a small town. When one of
their young students gets angry at them, she lies and
tells her parents that they are lesbian lovers. Almost
overnight, the town goes into revolt and outrage. The
students are yanked from the school and the women's lives
are ruined. And if that isn't bad enough, one of the
women turns out to be a closeted lesbian who has never
told anyone her big secret. She can't cope, and at the
end of the movie she hangs herself. This is a very well
written and filmed movie, but terribly depressing. Airs:
- Wed. 1/18/95, 9:00 pm, Encore cable
- Wed.-Thurs., 1/18-19/95, 3:00 am, Encore
- Thurs. 1/19/95, 11:00 am, Encore
- Fri. 1/20/95, 8:50 am, Encore

>> SHIRLEY: HOMOSEXUALITY AND ADOPTION. Airs in most
areas on Wed. 1/18/95. Check local listings, but airings
include:
- Wed.-Thurs. 1/18-19/95, 12:30 am, Phila. PA WGBS ch. 57

>> MONTEL WILLIAMS: CHILDREN AND AIDS. Airs in most
areas on Thurs. 1/19/95, including:
- Thurs. 1/19/95, 10:00 am (& possibly also at 5:00 pm),
on NYC, NY WNW ch. 5
- Thurs. 1/19/95, 4:00 pm, Phila. PA KYW ch. 3

>> THE HANDMAID'S TALE. 1990 movie based on Margaret
Atwood's futuristic horror story. After a nuclear war,
the majority of the population is infertile. Fertile
women are therefore enslaved, raped, and forced to bear
the children of the misogynistic male rulers. Lesbians
and gay men are imprisoned for "sexual crimes". This
movie has a significant lesbian character, but be warned:
this is a terribly depressing movie. Airs:
- Fri. 1/20/95, 1:30 pm and 10:00 pm, Bravo cable

The following shows air once this week as far as I know:

>> CHEERS (CC). Airs Sat. 1/14/95, 11:00 pm, WPIX NYC-
based national cable ch. 11. This is the episode in which
some of the bar regulars think that Cheers is turning into
a gay hangout. This one has a great ending.

>> ALL IN THE FAMILY. Airs Sat. 1/14/95, 11:30 pm, Phila.
PA WGBS ch. 57. May or may not air in other areas in
daily syndication. TV Guide says "Archie revives a
beautiful entertainer with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation."
The rest of the story is that the beautiful entertainer
turns out to be a female impersonator.

Hi, folks! This is note #3 (of 4) of the list of tv shows
with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight
AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 1/14/95 - Fri 1/20/95.
Be sure to read notes #1, 2, and 4. All times Eastern.

*************** CONTINUED FROM NOTE #2 ******************

>> ALL MY CHILDREN 25TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL (CC). Airs
Sun. 1/15/95, 8:00 pm, ABC. TV Guide says that this
special, hosted by Carol Burnett, will include coverage of
All My Children's "handling of social issues". Unknown if
it will include coverage of the fact that AMC was one of
the first soaps to have a recurring lesbian character
about a decade ago. It's possible, but no promises.

>> PHILADELPHIA (CC). Scheduled to air WITHOUT SCRAMBLING
on Sun. 1/15/95, 8:00 pm, on Showtime cable, as a part of
their free preview. Highly recommended. Tom Hanks won an
Oscar for his role as a closeted gay lawyer who develops
AIDS, is fired from his job, & sues his law firm for
discrimination while simultaneously dealing with his
rapidly advancing illness. Denzel Washington co-stars as
a homophobic attorney who reluctantly represents Hanks,
and who winds up re-evaluating his fears and opinions
about gays in the process. Antonio Banderas heads up a
superb supporting cast, playing Hanks' life partner. The
movie also features a brief performance by the terrific
gay male a cappella group, The Flirtations, including
Michael Callen, who died of AIDS after the movie was
filmed. (But believe it or not, the Flirts' song was NOT
included in the movie's released soundtrack!)

>> MRS. DOUBTFIRE (CC). Airs Mon. 1/16/95, 6:00 pm, HBO.
Robin Williams plays a divorced man who pretends to be an
English nanny so his ex-wife will hire him to stay with
his kids. Harvey Fierstein appears as Williams' gay
brother, a makeup artist who creates the transformation.

>> MELROSE PLACE (CC). Airs Mon. 1/16/95, 9:00 pm, Fox.
Gay character Matt appears in this episode. ("Matt
confirms Amanda's suspicion that Michael lied about
Peter's research being above board."-TV Guide)

>> CYBILL (CC). Airs Mon. 1/16/95, 9:30 pm, CBS. No
promise on gay content, but a correspondent who saw them
contacted me to let me know that both of the first two
episodes contained gay-positive dialogue and characters.

>> BETRAYAL. Airs Mon-Tues., 1/16-17/95, 4:00 am, Arts &
Entertainment cable. TV Guide says: "Harold Pinter's
ironic study of a long-term triangular relationship
(Jeremy Irons, Ben Kingsley, Patricia Hodge)."

>> WOMEN OF THE HOUSE(CC). Airs Wed. 1/18/95, 8:00 pm,
CBS. A friend said that this week's episode is supposed
to have 4 women wind up sharing a bed, and that this
"could lead to some suggestive comments." No promises.

*************** CONTINUED FROM NOTE #3 ******************

>> NORTHERN EXPOSURE (CC). Airs Wed. 1/18/95, 10:00 pm,
CBS. Not gay content, but it sounds like there might be
some interesting gender discussion. TV Guide says:
"Northern Exposure's 100th episode finds Cicely
experiencing a highly unusual epidemic: 'men are acting
like women, and women are acting like men'."

>> MY SO-CALLED LIFE (CC). Airs Thurs. 1/18/95, 8:00 pm,
ABC. In this past episode, bisexual character Ricky (who
has been kicked out of his house) discussed his attraction
for a male classmate. I missed part of the show, but I
don't think they discussed the fact that he is currently
staying with a gay male teacher and the teacher's lover.
There may or may not be more on this in the coming week,
but it seems likely.

>> BIOGRAPHY: MICHELANGELO. Airs Thurs. 1/19/95, 8:00
pm, Arts & Entertainment cable. Unknown if the artist's
sexual orientation will be discussed, but I've read
reports that he was gay.

>> SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION. Airs Thurs. 1/19/95, 8:00
pm, Showtime cable. A couple can't get rid of a gay con
artist (Will Smith).

>> ER (CC). Airs Thurs. 1/19/95, 10:00 pm, NBC. TV Guide
says the caseload includes "a teen prostitute with AIDS."

>> THE KRAYS. Airs Thurs. 1/19/95, 10:35 pm, The Movie
Channel. Exceedingly violent, but fact-based, movie about
twin brothers who ran a crime syndicate in London in the
1960s. One of them was gay.

       ---------> FUTURE SHOW ALERTS! <---------
Also, be on the lookout for these future shows...

>> IN THE LIFE. Lesbian, gay, & bi entertainment show.
The next installment of this now-quarterly series is
scheduled to be broadcast to satellite dish owners on
Tues. 1/31/95, 9:00 pm, on Telstar 401 Ku transponder 6,
11,855 MHz (horizontal polarity).

>> SERVING IN SILENCE: THE GRETHE CAMMERMEYER STORY. Will
air on NBC on Monday 2/6/95. Glenn Close will play
Cammermeyer, a medal-winning Army nurse who also has the
distinction of being the highest-ranking officer ever
kicked out of the US military for being a lesbian. Barbra
Streisand is executive-producing this long-awaited show,
which will reportedly include a lesbian kiss.

>> Also, look for a new Whoopi Goldberg movie that is
scheduled to hit theaters on 2/3/95, "BOYS ON THE SIDE".
Despite the obnoxious title, Whoopi's character is
supposed to be a lesbian.

********************************************************

That's it for this week's listing, folks. Be sure to read
notes #1 - #3 also. Happy viewing.
