Remember, if you don't subscribe to any of them, may I suggest checking you local video rental store. Happy Viewing!" ---NOT2 Hi, folks! This is a list of TV shows with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight AIDS themes, for the TV week of Saturday, 1/07/95 though Friday, 1/13/95. Based on TV listings for the Phila/NJ/NYC area. Sat >> TODAY. Airs Sat 1/7/95, 7:00 am, NBC. Features a profile of lesbian rock star Melissa Etheridge. Sat >> THE PELICAN BRIEF (CC). Airs Sat 1/7/95, 12:30 pm, Prism cable. $ V This 1993 drama stars Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington as a law student and reporter who team up to solve the assassinations of 2 US Supreme Court Justices. It is incidental to the movie, but one of them turns out to have been a closeted gay man. Based on the John Grisham novel of the same name. Sat >> PHILADELPHIA (CC). Airs Sat 1/7/95, 8:00 pm, Showtime cable. $ V Highly recommended. Tom Hanks won an Oscar for his role as a closeted gay lawyer who develops AIDS, is fired from his job, & sues his law firm for discrimination while simultaneously dealing with his rapidly advancing illness. Denzel Washington co-stars as a homophobic attorney who reluctantly represents Hanks, and who winds up re-evaluating his fears and opinions about gays in the process. Antonio Banderas heads up a superb supporting cast, playing Hanks' life partner. The movie also features a brief performance by the terrific gay male a cappella group, The Flirtations, including Michael Callen, who died of AIDS after the movie was filmed. (But believe it or not, the Flirts' song was NOT included in the movie's released soundtrack!) IMPORTANT NOTE: One very bright spot for those of us who don't subscribe to Showtime: The network is going to re-broadcast Philadelphia next Sunday night 1/15/95, at 8:00 pm. I've been told that Showtime will be having a FREE PREVIEW day on 1/15, so most folks with a cable box will probably be able to watch it! Mark your calendars. Sat >> THE PELICAN BRIEF (CC). See above. Airs Sat 1/7/95, 9:00 pm, $ V Prism cable. Sat >> MAURICE. Airs Sat 1/7/95, 9:00 pm, Bravo cable. 1987 British $ V movie about a gay man who comes to terms with his sexuality in Edwardian England. It's been years since I saw this, but I remember it as a beautifully filmed love story that also had a lot to say about class differences and societal homophobia. An understandable favorite among my gay male friends. Sat >> THE KRAYS. Airs Sat-Sun, 1/7-8/95, 12:10 am, The Movie Channel. $ V Exceedingly violent, but fact-based, movie about twin brothers who ran a crime syndicate in London in the 1960s. One of them was gay. Sat >> MAURICE. See above. Airs Sat-Sun, 1/7-8/95, 2:30 am, on the Bravo $ V cable network. Sat >> THE PELICAN BRIEF (CC). See above. Airs Sat-Sun, 1/7-8/95, 4:35 $ V am, Prism Cable. Sun >> THE HANDMAID'S TALE. Airs Sun 1/8/95, 10:00 pm, Bravo Cable. 1990 $ V movie based on Margaret Atwood's futuristic horror story. After a nuclear war, the majority of the population is infertile. Fertile women are therefore enslaved, raped, and forced to bear the children of the misogynistic male rulers. Lesbians and gay men are imprisoned for "sexual crimes". This movie has a significant lesbian character, but be warned: this is a terribly depressing movie. Sun >> THE HANDMAID'S TALE. See above. Airs Sun-Mon, 1/8-9/95, 3:00 am, $ V Bravo Cable. Tue >> ROLONDA: GAY BASHING. Airs Tues 1/10/95, 10:00 am, New York City L WABC ch 7. Airs Tuesday in most areas. Check your local listings. Tue >> ROLONDA: GAY BASHING. Airs Tues 1/10/95, 11:00 am, Phila PA KYW L ch 3. Tue >> SCHOOLBREAK SPECIAL: "DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE" (CC). Airs Tues 1/10/95, 4:00 pm, CBS. TV Guide says: "A high-school student (Lisa Dean Ryan) learns that the auto-accident death of her ex-boyfriend was caused by drug use - and that he also may have infected her with the AIDS virus." Tue >> THE SERGEANT. Airs Tues-Wed, 1/10-11/95, 2:00 am, on Phila PA WPHL L ch 17. Yet another addition to my list of all-time most depressing movies. TV Guide describes this one as: "(1968) Rod Steiger's performance dominates Dennis Murphy's story about repressed homosexuality in the peace-time Army." Thu >> MONTEL WILLIAMS: CHILDREN AND AIDS. Airs Thurs 1/12/95, 4:00 pm, L Phila PA KYW ch 3. Airing on Thursday in most areas. Check your local listings. Thu >> GERALDO: LESBIAN POLICE OFFICERS. Airs Thurs 1/12/95, 4:00 pm, on L both New York City WCBS ch 2 AND Philadelphia PA WCAU ch 10. Airs Thursday in most areas. Check local listings. Thu >> MONTEL WILLIAMS: CHILDREN AND AIDS. Airs Thurs 1/12/95, 5:00 pm, L New York City NY WNYW ch 5. Thu >> MY SO-CALLED LIFE (CC). Airs Thurs 1/12/95, 8:00 pm, ABC. The TV Guide doesn't indicate any story line for Ricky, the bisexual character, but you can bet that his story will be continued this week, and that this show will be one you'll want to watch and/or tape. NOTE: For anyone who may have missed it, last week's episode ended as Ricky (who has been kicked out of his house by his parents) surprised a male teacher by showing up at the door of the home he shares with his male partner. In a scene shortly before Ricky appeared, the men were discussing the possible misinterpretations that homophobic parents & school administrators might have if the teacher let the homeless teen stay with them. This storyline has been building for the last two shows, and is being extremely well handled. Fri >> THE CHILDREN'S HOUR. Airs Fri 1/13/95, 9:00 am, Encore cable. C V This is the 1962 movie adaptation of Lillian Hellman's play of the same name. Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine play school teachers who run a private school for girls in a small town. When one of their young students gets angry at them, she lies and tells her parents that they are lesbian lovers. Almost overnight, the town goes into revolt and outrage. The students are yanked from the school and the women's lives are ruined. And if that isn't bad enough, one of the women turns out to be a closeted lesbian who has never told anyone her big secret. She can't cope, and at the end of the movie she hangs herself. This is a very well written and filmed movie, but terribly depressing. Fri >> THE CHILDREN'S HOUR. See above. Airs Fri 1/13/95, 3:00 pm, Encore C V cable. Fri >> CRISS CROSS (CC). Airs Fri 1/13/95, 5:30 pm, Showtime cable. $ V "Chris confronts his feelings about gay rights when he's assigned to write an essay on the subject." - TV Guide Fri >> SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION. Airs Fri 1/13/95, 8:00 pm, Showtime. $ V TV Guide says: "John Guare adapted his acclaimed play about a wealthy couple who are duped by a shrewd con artist. When Paul (Will Smith), the apparent victim of a mugging, seeks refuge at the home of the Kittredges (Oscar nominee Stockard Channing and Donald Sutherland), they take him in and fall under the spell of this charming young man who claims to be a college friend of their children and the son of Sidney Poitier. The Kittredges come to doubt Paul's story, however, and find it difficult to get him out of their lives." What they don't say, but which was reported when the movie came to the theaters, is the fact that the con artist is gay. Fri >> DOING TIME ON MAPLE DRIVE. Airs Fri 1/13/95, 9:00 pm, Lifetime C V cable. 1992 movie about a family dealing with some conflicts, including some that involve gayness. Fri >> SCANDAL: HOLLYWOOD CONFIDENTIAL. Airs Fri 1/13/95, 10:00 pm, on P Phila PA PBS WHYY ch 12. May or may not air on other PBS stations. "Recalling the scandal sheet Confidential, which reported gossip about Hollywood stars until it ceased publication in the late 1950s. Included: a look at stories written about Rock Hudson."-TV Guide I have a couple of additional notes this week: Several people wrote to say they were upset that ARMISTEAD MAUPIN'S TALES OF THE CITY didn't air in their cities. I've since learned that the series is available for purchase on VHS tape. One source is the SIGNALS catalog, which helps fund the development efforts of gay-friendly public broadcasting station WGBH's Educational Foundation. Anyone interested in purchasing the video series can order it from SIGNALS at 1-800-669-9696. Their catalog item # is 33864. Their price for the 3-tape set is $59.95. ---------> FUTURE SHOW ALERTS! <--------- Also, be on the lookout for these future shows... >> IN THE LIFE. Lesbian, gay, & bi entertainment show. Attention satellite dish owners: The next installment of this now-quarterly series is scheduled to be broadcast on Tues 1/31/95, 9:00 pm, on Telstar 401 Ku transponder 6, 11,855 MHz (horizontal polarity). >> SERVING IN SILENCE: THE GRETHE CAMMERMEYER STORY. Will air on NBC on Monday 2/6/95. Glenn Close will play Cammermeyer, a medal-winning Army nurse who also has the distinction of being the highest-ranking officer ever kicked out of the US military for being a lesbian. Barbra Streisand is executive-producing this long-awaited show. That's it for this week's listing, folks. Happy viewing.
