Subject: Gay TV Shows 12/3/94-12/9/94

Hi, folks! This is note #1 (of 3) of the list of tv shows
with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight
AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 12/03/94-Fri 12/09/94.
Be sure to read notes #2 & 3 also. Most times are Eastern.

***** NOTE: BEWARE OF PBS PLEDGE BREAKS THIS WEEK! *****

The following shows air at multiple/various times:

>> IN THE LIFE. Lesbian & gay entertainment show.
- Season Premiere show #401:  Playwright Terrence McNally;
Actress Amanda Bearse; 'two-spirit' Native American
lesbians & gays; and employees from AT&T and HBO Time
Warner on being openly gay in the workplace. Check your
local PBS and public access schedule, but upcoming
scheduled airings of this episode include the following
LOCAL TIMES (NOT necessarily Eastern times):
Buffalo, NY: Mon. 12/12/94, 9:00 pm, WNEQ ch. 23
- Also, look for December's episode #402. I haven't
received the 12/94 newsletter yet, but based on November's
air dates, the following stations are probably going to
air it early in the month, and may be airing it this week:
Dallas TX KDTN ch. 2; Miami FL WLRN ch. 17; the North
Dakota public TV stations; Pittsburgh PA WQEX ch. 16; San
Mateo, CA KCSM ch. 60; Washington DC WETA ch. 26; and the
Wisconsin Public tv stations.

>> THE KATHY & MO SHOW. Kathy Najimy & Maureen (Mo)
Gaffney's hilarious joint feminist comedy stand up show.
Among the sketches are several with lesbian-positive
content. (In fact, I'm writing the tv list early this
week specifically to call attention to this show, which
airs early in the week, since it airs so rarely and is
requested so often.) Recommended. Airs:
- Sat. 12/3/94, noon, Comedy Central
- Sat-Sun. 12/3-4/94, 1:00 am, Comedy Central

>> SOAPDISH (CC). Sally Field and Kevin Kline star in
this 1991 parody of life behind the scenes of a television
soap opera. Among the movie's numerous villains is a
transgendered person. Airs:
- Sun. 12/4/94, 6:15 pm, Cinemax
- Fri. 12/9/94, 10:30 am, Cinemax

>> THE HANDMAID'S TALE. 1990 futuristic drama based on
Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name. This movie
portrays a horrific and perverted post-nuclear-war future.
The few remaining fertile women are enslaved by the men in
power, raped, and forced to bear their children. The
children are then taken away from the mothers and raised
by the rapists & the rapists' wives. In the world
portrayed in this movie, lesbians and gay men are also
imprisoned as "sexual criminals". Warning: This movie is
terribly depressing. Airings include:
- Mon. 12/5/94, 8:00 pm, Bravo cable
- Mon-Tues., 12/5-6/94, 2:30 am, Bravo

- Mon.-Tues. 12/5-6/94, 12:30 am, Phila. PA WGBS ch. 57

>> MAURY POVICH: LOVE TRIANGLES (CC). No promises on
this show. It is probably the "He left me for another
woman" variety of triangles. Airs in most areas on Tues.
12/6/94, including:
- Tues. 12/4/94, 2:00 pm, NYC NY WNBC ch. 4
- Tues. 12/4/94, 3:00 pm, Phila. PA KYW ch. 3

>> THE SIMPSONS (CC). On Thurs. 12/8/94, many Fox
affiliates will rerun the episode in which gay author/
actor Harvey Fierstein provides the voice of a male
secretary. Check local listings, but airings include:
- Thurs. 12/8/94, 7:00 pm, Phila. PA WTXF ch 29
- Thurs. 12/8/94, 7:30 pm, NYC NY WNYW ch. 5

>> COACH (CC). That same night, many stations will air a
syndicated rerun of the Coach episode in which Hayden
freaks out when he learns that one of his athletes is gay.
This show has a very funny scene in which the Coach slowly
comes to realize that he has gone into a gay bar. Check
local listings, but airings include:
- Thurs. 12/8/94, 7:30 pm, on Phila. PA WTXF ch. 29
- Thurs. 12/8/94, 11:30 pm, national cable ch. 11 (WPIX)

>> WHY AM I GAY? STORIES OF COMING OUT (CC). Documentary
film. Airs:
- Fri. 12/9/94, 6:30 am (NOT pm) and again at 3:30 pm, HBO

>> DONAHUE: TEENAGE HOMOSEXUALITY AND CROSS-DRESSING
(CC). Airs in most areas on Fri. 12/9/94, including:
- Fri. 12/9/94, 9:00 am, on Phila. PA KYW ch. 3
- Fri. 12/9/94, 4:00 pm, on NYC NY WNBC ch. 4

The following shows air once this week as far as I know:

>> PERSONAL BEST. Airs Sat. 12/3/94, 1:10 pm, Bravo
cable. 1982 movie about two female Olympic athletes
(Mariel Hemingway & Patrice Donnelly) who are involved in
a lesbian relationship. Scott Glenn plays their
incredibly obnoxious, misogynistic male coach. Although
some women liked this movie, most of the lesbians I know
hated it because of its very male-oriented depiction.

>> MAKING LOVE. Airs Sat-Sun., 12/3-4/94, 4:45 am,
Cinemax. Kate Jackson, Harry Hamlin, and Michael Ontkean
star in this film, which was the OTHER 1982 theatrical
release to contain a gay theme. In this one, a married
man leaves his wife for another man.
