Subject: Gay TV Shows 10/8/94-10/14/94

Hi, folks! This is note #1 (of 3) of the list of tv shows
with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight
AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 10/08/94-Fri 10/14/94.
Be sure to read notes #2&3 also. All times are Eastern.

*********************************************************

The following shows air at multiple/various times:

>> ARTHUR ASHE: CITIZEN OF THE WORLD (CC). Profile of
the tennis star, which also discusses the complications
from AIDS that caused his death. Airs:
- Sun. 10/9/94, 9:00 am, HBO
- Fri. 10/14/94, 6:00 mp, HBO

>> LIVE AIDS CALL-IN SHOW. Chicago IL readers please take
note: A correspondent advised me that a live AIDS call-in
show airs TWICE EACH WEEK in Chicago. Airings are EVERY
Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 - 6:00 pm, on Chicago's
ch. 21. Host groups and topics rotate. I won't repeat
this listing each week, so please write it down.

>> MARILU: HOMOSEXUALITY/NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY SPECIAL.
Guests reportedly include actress Amanda Bearse
(Married...with Children), actor Dan Butler (Frasier),
comedienne Suzanne Westenhoeffer, and journalist/tv
reporter Garrett Glazer (formerly from Entertainment
Tonight). Check local listings. Airs nationally on
Tuesday, 10/11/94, including:
- Tues. 10/11/94, 9:00 am, New York City WCBS ch. 2
- Tues. 10/11/94, noon, Phila. PA KYW ch. 3

>> OPRAH: GAY YOUTH (????). This one is iffy. For the
past few years, Oprah has had a gay-oriented show on
National Coming Out Day (NCOD). My TV Guide does not
indicate her topics this week, but sources have told me
that she taped a show on Gay Youth that will air sometime
this week, probably (but not definitely) on Tuesday
10/11/94 for NCOD. Actual air date is not guaranteed, so
if you really want to catch this show, you might want to
tape Oprah all week until it airs. Check local listings
for your channels/times, but airings include 4pm weekdays
on NYC NY WABC ch. 7 and Phila. PA WPVI ch. 6.

>> OUT THERE. Last year, Comedy Central taped and aired
the first nationally broadcast made-for-tv special of
lesbian/gay/bi comedy, which they debuted on National
Coming Out Day. The show was great. I'm pleased to note
that they're doing it again this year! They're airing
both specials this week:
> OUT THERE 2 (1994): Performers include Kate Clinton,
Scott Silverman, Elvira Kurt, Mark Davis, Frank Maya, and
John McGivern. With cameo messages from Patrick Stewart,
Cybill Shepherd, and Whoopi Goldberg. (See the review on
pg. 64 of the 10/7/94 Entertainment Weekly.) Airs:

Gomez, Steven Moore, Suzanne Westenhoefer, Lea DeLaria,
etc. Cameos from Bea Arthur & others. Airs:
- Tues. 10/11/94, 11:00 pm, Comedy Central

>> SWEET AS YOU ARE. TV Guide says: "(Made for British
TV, 1987) NR; a teacher (Liam Neeson) jeopardizes his
marriage - and his life - when he has an affair with a
student who's carrying the AIDS virus. Julia: Miranda
Richardson)." Airs:

waitress who becomes a diplomat. Her housemates and best
friends are a gay male couple, who are portrayed
positively. Airs:
- Thurs. 10/13/94, 11:00 pm, Encore
- Fri. 10/14/94, 1:45 pm, Encore
- Fri. 10/14/94, 9:00 pm, Encore

>> M. BUTTERFLY (CC). 1993 movie of David Henry Hwang's
Tony-winning play about a gay relationship. Jeremy Irons
and John Lone star. Airs:
- Fri. 10/14/94, noon, Prism
- Fri. 10/14/94, 9:00 pm, Prism

>> THREESOME. Airing on Pay Per View in October in many
areas. Threesome is a strange but somewhat amusing movie
about three college roommates, two male and one female.
Man #1 is in love with Woman #1. Woman #1 is in love with
Man #2. Man #2 is gay and falls in love with Man #1.
Check local pay per view listings.

The following shows air once this week as far as I know:

>> THE CHILDREN'S HOUR (CC). Airs Sun. 10/9/94, noon,
Cinemax. VERY depressing 1962 movie based on Lillian
Hellman's play of the same name. Audrey Hepburn and
Shirley MacLaine play two teachers who run a small private
school. A vindictive student lies and tells the town that
they are lovers. They aren't, but one of the women is a
closeted lesbian, and she hangs herself in shame. James
Garner co-stars. You've been warned.....

>> WOMEN IN SPORTS. Airs Sun. 10/9/94, 4:00 pm, ABC.
Interviews with women athletes, including Martina
Navratilova.

*************** CONTINUED FROM NOTE #2 ******************

>> REAL WORLD. Airs Sun. 10/9/94, 8:00 pm, MTV. TV Guide
says: "The roommates panic when Pedro becomes ill".
Pedro is a gay man who is very sick with AIDS. (Remember:
These are real people, not actors.)

>> POSITIVE (+) HEALTH. Airs in Phila. PA area on Tues.
10/11/94, 8:00 pm, on WYBE ch. 35. By and for People with
AIDS and people who are HIV-positive. In honor of
Octorer's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this week's show
includes part 1 of a 2-part special on breast cancer.
(One out of 8 U.S. women will contract breast cancer
sometime in her life, and some studies have placed the
numbers for lesbians to be as high as 1 in 3!)

>> BIOGRAPHY. Airs Wed. 10/12/94, 8:00 pm, Arts &
Entertainment. The topic is J. Edgar Hoover. Unknown if
his homosexuality will be discussed, but it seems likely.

>> CONAN O'BRIEN (CC). Airs Wed.-Thurs., 10/12-13/94,
12:35 pm, NBC. Guests include bisexual comedian/singer
Sandra Bernhard (Nancy on "Roseanne").

>> CHANTILLY LACE. Airs Wed.-Thurs., 10/12-13/94, 1:45
am, Showtime. This movie got a lot of coverage when it
first came out because it was a made-for-cable production
with an almost all female cast, and because the movie was
improvised. Each actress was given an outline of her
character but no script. Two of the women played a
lesbian couple, but with only moderate success.

>> THE KRAYS. Airs Thurs. 10/13/94, 9:00 pm, The Movie
Channel. Exceedingly violent but fact-based story of two
twin brothers who ran a London crime syndicate in the
1960s. One of them was gay.

>> FRIENDS (CC). Airs Thurs. 10/13/94, 8:30 pm, NBC. The
TV Guide doesn't indicate any gay content for this new NBC
Thursday night series, but readers have advised me that
they have some lesbian characters who look like they will
be regulars. One correspondent wrote: "It has a lesbian
couple in it. In fact, the lesbian is divorced from one
of the central male characters and she is pregnant with
his child, but she and her lover are going to raise it as
a couple (with some help and comic relief from the ex-
hubby, no doubt). All in all it was a positive, if not
humorous portrayal of lesbians...at least those who have
divorced men for women." Another reader added: "I saw
this show just the other night. It was amazing - the
lesbian ex-wife and her lover looked and acted just like
normal people and everything! Wow, what a concept."
