This is note #2 (of 3) of the list of tv shows with gay, lesbian, other sexual minority, and gay/straight AIDS themes, for the tv week of Sat 04/02/94-Fri 04/08/94. Be sure to read notes #1 & #3 also. All times Eastern. *************** CONTINUED FROM NOTE #1 ****************** >> STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (CC). SYNDICATED RERUN. Check local listings; this will air in many daily syndication areas on Monday, 4/4/94, including 7:00 pm on Philadelphia PA's WTXF ch. 29. Dr. Beverly Crusher falls in love with an alien ambassador (Franc Luz). But when she learns that "he" is really a Trill - a conjoined symbiant species - and the symbiant is then transferred into a female host body, Dr. Bev can't cope with her lover's new female form.... This was a well done show. >> WHY AM I GAY? STORIES OF COMING OUT (CC). Airs Mon. 4/4/94, 11:30 pm, HBO-2 (not regular HBO). This HBO documentary has several segments, which mostly focus on real gays and lesbians. The profiles include a very moving piece on Michael Callen, the Flirtations singer who recently died of AIDS after having lived with HIV for over a decade. (It was filmed shortly before he died.) There is also a segment on a lesbian couple planning a commitment ceremony, and one on a gay youth program. However, HBO also tossed in an obligatory "balance piece" about an anti-gay religious/political organization. Aside from that one segment, this was a very good show. >> ARSENIO HALL (CC). Check local listings. Airs late night Mon 4/4/94, including Mon-Tues, 4/4-5/94, midnight, on Philadelphia PA WTXF ch. 29. Guests include rock star Melissa Etheridge, who recently came out as a lesbian (and whose latest album is called "Yes, I Am"). >> LIFE STORIES - FAMILIES IN CRISIS: "MORE THAN FRIENDS - THE COMING OUT OF HEIDI LEITER." (CC). Airs Tues. 4/5/94, 3:00 pm, HBO-2. This is about two teenage lesbians (played by Sabrina Lloyd and Kate Anthony) who go to a high school prom together. They receive mixed reactions, and one of them is gay bashed. The show is based on a real story of two women who did this, and one of them makes a personal statement about the experience at the end of the show. Recommended. >> ROC (CC). Airs Tues. 4/5/94, 8:30 pm, FOX. This is a probable gay show, but NOT a definite one. TV Guide says: "Brotherly love is the topic of an amusing Roc in which Richard Roundtree returns as Andrew's brother Russell, who announces that his infrequent visits will be even less frequent in the future." An episode of Roc that aired a long time ago was about Roc's gay brother's same-sex wedding. I don't recall the character's or actor's name, so this episode may be about a different brother. ************** TO BE CONTINUED ON NOTE #3 **************** Warmly, Carol Mortimer, NJ Prodigy ID = npwc08a In IDs: 0 & 1 are numbers. TV Guide says: "A look at the AIDS epidemic among Latinos in the US and the Caribbean." >> RICKI LAKE: HETEROSEXUALS BEING MISTAKEN FOR HOMOSEXUALS. Airs in most syndicated areas on Wed. 4/6/94, including Wed-Thurs., 4/6-7/94, 3:35 am, on Philadelphia PA's KYW ch. 3. See pg. 7 of the 4/8/94 issue of Entertainment Weekly for an article about this show. They say: "According to eyewitnesses, an audience attending the March 22 taping of the talk show became increasingly hostile during a discussion entitled 'I'm Angry Because People Think I'm Gay.' After the show, one audience member, who had identified himself as a homosexual during the taping, was attacked while waiting for an elevator. 'It was out of control,' says one of the participants, Cathay Che of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation...." Later, it says: "Lake is being criticized for failing to challenge the audience's inappropriate remarks. 'When I said that I was gay-bashed, the audience cheered,' says Brad Lamm, who was brought on to provide a gay point of view. 'She didn't respond at all to what was going on.' " They also report that "Producer Gail Steinberg insists GLAAD has nothing to fear: 'The show that will air [April 6] is different [from the one] the audience saw in the studio,' she says." >> CITY OF HOPE (CC). Airs Thurs. 4/7/94, 3:45 pm, HBO-2. 1991 John Sayles movie about life in a complex New Jersey city. There are numerous plots and sub-plots. When they get caught, they tell the police that the jogger was a gay man who had made a pass at them.... ******************************************************** That's it for this week.
