Hi, folks! This is a list of tv shows with gay, lesbian, other sexual
minority, and gay/straight AIDS themes, for the tv week of Saturday
3/12/94 to Friday 3/18/94. Based on TV listings for the Phila/NJ area.

Sun >> LIFE STORIES - FAMILIES IN CRISIS (CC). An episode of Life Stories
$ is airing Sun. 3/13/94, 12:30 pm, on HBO. I think, but am *NOT*
sure, that it will be the "MORE THAN FRIENDS - THE COMING OUT OF
HEIDI LEITER" episode. That show is about two teenage lesbians
(played by Sabrina Lloyd and Kate Anthony) who go to a high school
prom together. They receive mixed reactions, and one of them is
gay bashed. The show is based on a real story of two women who did
this, and one of them makes a personal statement about the
experience at the end of the show. Recommended.

Sun >> AND THEN THERE WAS ONE (CC). Airing Sun. 3/13/94, 8:00 pm,
Lifetime cable. Original Lifetime 1994 movie about a family and
AIDS. TV Guide says: "Roxy and Vinnie Ventola (Amy Madigan,
Dennis Boutsikaris) seem to have it all - successful careers as
comedy writers, a loving marriage, and, after years of trying to
conceive, a baby girl. But their lives take a nightmarish turn
when their daughter is diagnosed with AIDS - and similar diagnoses
follow for Roxy and Vinnie. The film features affecting
performances by Madigan and Boutsikaris and welcome touches of
       subtle humor."

Sun >> STATE OF THE ARTS. Airs on some PBS stations on Sun. 3/13/94,
P including 10:00 pm on Camden, NJ WNJS ch. 23. Topic is a
discussion of bias-related crimes, with clips from the play "Diary
of Anne Frank". Unknown if it will discuss gay bashing. (Beware
       of pledge breaks!)

Mon >> WHY AM I GAY? STORIES OF COMING OUT (CC). Airing Mon. 3/14/94,
$ 7:00 am, HBO. Re-broadcast of HBO's original production. The
documentary hour has several segments, which mostly focus on real
gays and lesbians. The profiles include a very moving piece on
Michael Callen, the Flirtations singer who recently died of AIDS
after having lived with HIV for over a decade. (It was filmed
shortly before he died.) There is also a segment on a lesbian
couple planning a commitment ceremony, and one on a gay youth
program. If memory serves, however, HBO also tossed in an
obligatory "balance piece" about an anti-gay religious/political
organization. Aside from that segment, this was a very good show.

Mon >> PRELUDE TO A KISS (CC). Airing Mon., 3/14/94, 4:00 pm, HBO. Alec
$ Baldwin & Meg Ryan are a straight couple who get married. At the
wedding ceremony, an old man kisses Ryan, and their souls magically
exchange bodies. Baldwin slowly realizes that his new "wife" is
really an old man who is trapped in Meg Ryan's body. No really gay
content, but some interesting discussion ensues regarding sexuality
       etc.

Mon >> ARSENIO HALL (CC). Monday's guests include HIV-positive athlete
L Magic Johnson, who will be hosting a celebrity special next week.
Unknown if he will discuss his health. Airs late night Monday
3/14/94, including midnight Mon- Tues, 3/14-15/94, on Philadelphia
       PA ch. 29 (WTXF).

Tue >> ONE ON ONE WITH MAGIC JOHNSON. Airs Tues., 3/15/94, 8:00 pm, on
Fox & some non-Fox stations. Johnson interviews celebrities like
Whoopi Goldberg, Roseanne & Tom Arnold, etc. Unknown if Johnson
will discuss his health or Roseanne will talk about the recent
controversy over her series' lesbian kiss episode that aired on
       3/1/94.

Wed >> AN EVENING WITH MARLENE DIETRICH. Airs on some PBS stations on
P Wed., 3/16/94, including Phila. PA WHYY ch. 12 at 10:45 pm. A
       1972 London performance.

Thu >> BIOGRAPHY: ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. Airs Thurs., 3/17/94, 7:00 am, Arts
& Entertainment cable network. It is unlikely that this bio will
discuss Eleanor Roosevelt's relationship with reporter Lorena
Hickok (whom she called "Hick" and "Darling"). However, when
Eleanor's papers were opened publicly many years after she died,
there were some which suggested quite strongly that she and "Hick"
       were lovers.
[Read "THE LIFE OF LORENA HICKOK, E.R.'S FRIEND" by Doris Faber
(William Morrow & Co. Publishers, 1980) for details and excerpts
from the letters. Example: When she was away on trips, E.R.
often wrote Hick letters saying that she was "aching" to hold
Hickok again. Meanwhile, Hickok was writing letters to E.R.
musing about "the feeling of that soft spot, just north-east of
the corner of your mouth, against my lips."]

Thu >> WHY AM I GAY? STORIES OF COMING OUT (CC). See above. Airing
$      Thurs., 3/17/94, 2:30 pm, HBO

Thu >> OUT OF THE CLOSET. Airs Thurs., 3/17/94, 8:00 pm, on Philadelphia
L PA's WYBE ch. 35. Topic is lesbian leaders.

Thu >> JFK (CC). Airing Thurs., 3/17/94, 10:30 pm, HBO-2. Oliver Stone's
$ conspiracy theories about the Kennedy assassination. Among his
suspects are some incredibly homophobically portrayed homosexual
       men.

Fri >> JFK (CC). See above. Airing Fri., 3/18/94, 8:00 am, Prism.
$

Fri >> PRELUDE TO A KISS (CC). See above. Airing Fri., 3/18/94, 9:00 am,
$      HBO.

Fri >> ROSEANNE. Roseanne sticks her two cents into Leon's argument with
L his male lover, over the issue of whether or not they should
"straighten up" the house for a parental visit. Airs in many areas
in daily syndication on Friday 3/18/94, including 7:00 pm on
       Philadelphia PA WGBS ch. 57.

Fri >> AND THEN THERE WAS ONE (CC). See above. Airing Fri., 3/18/94,
       9:00 pm, Lifetime cable.

your local PBS affiliate. Upcoming airings include but are not
necessarily limited to the following. (Note: beware of PBS pledge
breaks this week in some areas!)
