Date: Fri, 29 Jul 1994 09:22:00 EDT [The following is the response my partner and I received after sending a letter to Nestle asking why the company pulled its ads from the episode of "Northern Exposure" in which Erick Hillman and Ron Bance, the show's gay couple, get married. Does anybody know what Nestle makes other than chocolate Crunch bars and that putrid stuff people put in milk to flavor it "chocolate"? ] Nestle USA, Inc. 800 North Brand Blvd. Glandale, CA 91203 (818) 549-6818 May 29, 1994 Dear Mr. Cendo & Mr. Hamner: Thank you for contacting us about our guidlines regarding advertising and program sponsorship. We at Nestle have a long-standing policy of pre-screening all programs in which our commericals appear nationally and often decline to sponsor programs which do not meet our guidlines. We make it a point to avoid program content which we consider to be highly controversial. That is why we declined to sponsor the May 2, 1994, episode of Northern Exposure. A decision regarding program sponsorship is not a corporate judgment of the validity of the program's content. Given that Americans hold a wide variety of opinions and points of view, we acknowledge that we cannot please every television viewer all of the time. We value the opinions of our consumers and have reported your comments to our management. We appreciate your taking the time to tell us your concerns, and for giving us the opportunity to respond. Sincerely, Chris Cappiello Consumer Correspondent
