Maupin said yesterday the Britain's Channel 4 has pulled the plus on a "Tales of the City" sequel after failing to secure American co- financing for the $8 million production. PBS withdrew from the sequel last spring, despite the critical and ratings success of the six-hour "Tales of the City" miniseries. At one point, Showtime expressed interest, but has also backed out. Says author Maupin, "It's over. There are lots of things on the horizon for me, but it's disappointing that my own country couldn't somehow find a way to support this project ... I still lay the blame on the doorstep of PBS (which has apparently succumbed to pressure from right wing groups such as the American Family Association which lambasted the series for, in part, its frank treatment of homosexuality.)
