ON THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM: * Extended report on the November 8th U.S. midterm elections: Oregon and Idaho reject theocracy, and most queer candidates survive the "Republican revolution"; * A role model for the MTV generation is remembered; * Music by The Byrds, Queen and Romanovsky & Phillips ... ... and more! ******RUNDOWN****** OPENING TEASES/THEME MUSIC/INTRO CONTINUITY .............1:05 SEGMENT #1 - NewsWrap: "Revolution" was the word often used to describe the U.S. midterm elections on November 8th, and NewsWrap focuses on those results this week (intro music from "Turn, Turn, Turn" by THE BYRDS): Republicans gained control of both the U.S. House and Senate for the first time since the Eisenhower administration of the 1950's; however, statewide ballot measures in both Oregon and Idaho to prohibit civil rights protections for gays and lesbians were defeated [LEE ROBARTUS/KUOI-Moscow reports on the Idaho vote], but Christian supremacists were successful in votes repealing and preventing anti-discrimination protections for lesbians & gays in Alachua County, Florida; over 60 openly-gay & -lesbian candidates were running for office, and a majority were elected or re-elected, including Democratic Massachusetts Congressmen Barney Frank and Gerry Studds; in state legislatures, incumbents Dale McCormick (Maine), Karen Clark (Minnesota), Goerge Eighmey, Gail Shibley & Cynthia Wooten (Oregon), Will Fitzpatrick (Rhode Island), Glenn Maxey (Texas) and Tammy Baldwin (Wisconsin) were re-elected; feminist attorney and former TV star (Zelda on "Dobie Gillis") Sheila Kuehl will be the first open lesbian or gay to sit in the California lesgislature, as will Tim Van Zandt in Missouri; Cal Anderson moves from the Washington State House of Representatives to the State Senate, and Ken Cheuvront was elected to the Arizona State House; another "lavendar sweep" elected Tom Ammiano, Carol Migden & Susan Leal to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and Leslie Katz & Lawrence Wong to the Community College Board; Tom Chiola becomes the first openly-gay elected judge in Illinois, and open lesbians Terri Schwartz and Bonnie Dumanis were elected to judgeships in California; disappointing narrow losses were experienced by two candidates who would have been their state's first openly-queer elected official - New York Attorney General hopeful Karen Burstein and California Secretary of State candidate Tony Miller; while queer-friendly Republican governors William Weld (Massachusetts), Arne Carlson (Minnesota) and Christine Todd Whitman (New Jersey) were re-elected, so was California's Pete Wilson, who vetoed anti-discrimination protections for lesbians & gays in 1991 and domestic partnership legislation this year; queer-friendly Texas Governor Ann Richards was defeated by George W. Bush, son of the former President, and New York Governor Mario Cuomo lost his reelection bid to conservative State Senator George Pataki; however, Democrat Ben Cayetano, the only one of four candidates to support equal marriage rights for gays & lesbians was elected governor in Hawaii; religious conservatives, lead by The Christian Coalition, claimed a major share of the credit for the Republican juggernaut, which elected 5 of 6 "Jesse Helms clones" to the U.S. Senate--the one notable exception was Democrat Charles Robb's re-election over Republican Iran-Contra figure Oliver North in Virginia; and, after this review of U.S. "democracy in action", it's interesting to consider a quote from U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, in a recent reference to U.S. intervention in Haiti, who used his position as Senate Armed Services Committee Chair to uphold the Pentagon's ban on military service by gays & lesbians: "democracies can't work unless minorities are protected"(!)
