But on June 7, 1977, voters repealed a similar DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA measure that had originally been unanimously approved by the local County Commission. It was the first full-scale battle in the U.S. between the burgeoning religious right and a politically naive queer community, and the first to get the attention of the national -- even international -- mainstream media. Former beauty queen runner-up, pop singer and Florida Orange Juice spokesperson ANITA BRYANT led the "Save Our Children" repeal effort, warning that homosexuals can't reproduce, so they have to "recruit" youngsters into their "immoral lifestyle". Many incredulous gays and lesbians couldn't understand how anyone would believe such drivel. But they were shocked out of their closets by the over 2-to-1 majority voting for repeal, taking to the streets to protest many for the ffirst time - in the days following what came to be called "Orange Tuesday". This Way Out's LUCIA CHAPPELLE and GREG GORDON, who originally covered the events as they unfolded for the "IMRU" radio program on KPFK-FM/Los Angeles, use archival sound to recall the early days of a battle that continues to this day (with musical excerpts from "My Little Corner of the World" by ANITA BRYANT, "Don't Drink the Orange Juice" by ROD McKUEN, "Don't Pray For Me" by MARY WATKINS, and TOM WILSON-WEINBERG's "Save Our Children/Recruiters Fight Song" in its entirety). . . . 13:57 Closing Credits/continuity. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:23 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 29:02 =================================== * ============================== STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT," RECALLING A DADE COUNTY SHOCKER, DEFIANT DEMONSTRATIONS, AND THREE DECADES OF DEBATE...
