SEGMENT #1 - "NewsWrap": Actions in some 50 countries around the world
observing the third annual International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on May 17th
include Human Rights Watch releasing its annual homophobia "Hall of Shame," a
demonstration outside the Polish embassy in London protesting the homophobic
statements and policies of that country's leaders, an email campaign in
Australia urging MPs to support equality, an anti-homophobia meeting in Ankara, the
release of a new book about LGBT legal issues in Macedonia, a campus protest
in the Ukraine over the expulsion of an openly-gay student, a gathering to mark
the day and mourn recent gay-bashing murders in Halifax, a first-ever LGBT
film festival and publication of the first issue of a magazine for sexual and
gender minorities in Nepal, a film exhibition and discussion of discrimination
in the Philippines, the screening in Guyana of a film about lesbigay Jamaicans,
a pre-IDAHO ILGA-sponsored conference in Johannesburg addressing homophobia
in several African countries, and the announcement of the first signatures by
European mayors on a petition urging that Pride events be allowed in countries
on the continent where they've been banned; meanwhile, about 5,000 people
march for Pride in Warsaw after the mayor bows to the recent European Court of
Human Rights ruling that earlier bans violated E.U. laws, but officials in
Moscow and St. Petersburg formally ban Pride marches planned for later this month
in those Russian cities; some 80 gay men are reportedly beaten and arrested
during a police raid of a birthday party in Iran; and U.S. activists mourn the
death of staunch LGBT equality supporter Yolanda King and comment on the
passing of religious right leader Rev. Jerry Falwell (written by GREG GORDON, with
thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL and REX WOCKNER with BILL KELLEY, and reported
this week by DON LUPO and RICK WATTS). . 10:24

SEGMENT #3 - Marriage equality advocates planned actions across the U.S.
this week to commemorate the third anniversary of the legalization of same-gender
weddings in Massachusetts. In honor of all the happy couples -- and the
couples still hopeful that their day will come -- we take out "This Way Out’s"
Massachusetts weddings album to review our coverage of the big day: "It really
happened on May 17, 2004 for more than a thousand queer couples who got their
marriage licenses on the first day it became legal to do so in the Commonwealth
of MASSACHUSETTS. CAMBRIDGE jumped to be the first municipality to issue
licenses to gay & lesbian couples at the stroke of midnight. Later that day
BOSTON’s Mayor welcomed three of the original seven plaintiff couples who
successfully sued for marriage equality when they arrived at City Hall to get their
licenses, and the lawsuit's namesake couple, Julie & Hillary Goodridge, were
legally wed that afternoon at a Unitarian Universalist church (with comments by
same gender couples in CAMBRIDGE and BOSTON and a supportive opposite gender
couple, and by BOSTON MAYOR THOMAS MENINO; three of the original 7 "Goodridge"
plaintiff couples - ROB COMPTON & DAVID WILSON, JULIE & HILLARY GOODRIDGE, and
MIKE HORGAN & ED BALMELLI - and attorney MARY BONAUTO of Gay & Lesbian
Advocates and Defenders, the legal group behind the successful November 2003 Supreme
Judicial Court ruling; and excerpts from the Goodridge wedding -- all from
multimedia coverage provided on their Web site by the HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN; with
"Goin' To Massachusetts For Love," written & performed by JANICE
LEBER/www.sonomacountyfreepress.com/liver, and brief outro music from "Chapel of Love" by
THE DIXIE CUPS)". . . . . . . . . . . . . . 14:46
