John Howard that wants to use its constitutional power to overturn the law; the so-called "Federal Marriage Amendment" is rejected by the U.S. Senate despite PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH's push for its passage [with a brief excerpt from his radio address on the subject], while voters in Alabama make it the 20th U.S. state to constitutionally ban legal recognition of same gender couples; Canada's P.M. Stephen Harper announces that he won't fulfill his campaign promise to push Parliament to reconsider last year's marriage equality legislation for a few months -- a move his critics say is designed to allow anti-equality groups to lobby MPs for repeal; a new Vatican attack calls legal recognition of gay and lesbian couples "an eclipse of God", while new Italian P.M. That's the question in a case heard by the SUPREME COURT OF CANADA in mid-May. Legendary Toronto activist GEORGE HISLOP began a crusade to win Canadian Pension Plan survivor benefits after his partner of 28 years, Ron Shearer, died in 1986. Hislop himself died last October at the age of 78, but the case continued in his name and those of 4 co-claimants. "Hislop et al v. Attorney General Of Canada" appears to be both a demand for basic fairness and a complex legal case involving sometimes-technical issues, as the plaintiff's lead attorney DOUGLAS ELLIOTT explained recently during a conversation with This Way Out correspondent HEATHER KITCHING (excerpts from her "Queer FM" program on CITR/Vancouver) [7:05] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7:50 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by Academy Award-winning "Chicago" screenwriter and "Kinsey" writer/director BILL CONDON [:15] + Written, directed and starring PETER PAIGE of "Queer as Folk" fame, "SAY UNCLE" tells the story of gay artist Paul (Paige) whose closest friends, the Fabers, move to Japan, taking Paul’s two year-old godson Morgan with them. So what's an "uncle" to do? In Paul's desperate search to replace the lost relationship with his godson he pursues opportunities that will bring him into contact with children: working in a toy store, babysitting, and passing many hours playing with kids at the local playground. But a single, childless gay man at a playground? One child’s mother, Maggie (KATHY NAJIMY), thinks that Paul is up to no good and leads a neighborhood campaign against him, which quickly careens out of control. This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE talks with Paige and Najimy about their movie mix of comedy and challenging questions (with clips from the film, and outro music from "11:11", from the soundtrack, written and performed by RUFUS WAINWRIGHT) [7:55]. . . . . . . . . . . 8:10 [www.sayunclefilm.com, prideonscreen.com] Closing Credits/continuity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:25 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:55 ===================================== * =============================== STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", CANADIAN PENSION PLAN PLAINTIFFS PLEAD THEIR CASE IN THE SUPREME COURT, WHILE PETER PAIGE'S "SAY UNCLE" MIXES HUMOR WITH A PRICKLY PROBLEM...
