CALIFORNIA's Democrat-controlled state legislature on September 6th became the first in the U.S. to pass a marriage equality bill, AB 849, only to have a spokesperson for Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger announce less than 24 hours later that he would veto it. Openly gay state Assemblymember Mark Leno of San Francisco steered his bill through the chamber seeking four more votes than the measure had originally received there before being approved by the state Senate, and it passed the second time by the bare number required. This Way Out's GREG GORDON summarizes the week's events and has comments by Assemblymembers MARK LENO, TOM UMBERG and JAY LA SEUR; San Francisco Mayor GAVIN NEWSOM; and San Francisco couple JOHN LEWIS & STEWART GAFFNEY [with production thanks to CHRISTOPHER MARTINEZ, MOLLY PAIGE, SYLVESTER RIVERS, BRYAN GOEBEL and KCBS Radio/San Francisco] . . . . . . . . . . . . 9:00 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by "Tales of the City" novelist ARMISTEAD MAUPIN [:25] + Challenge Match Promo [:30]. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :55 SEGMENT #4 - When HURRICANE KATRINA touched down on the U.S. Gulf Coast on August 29th, the massive storm cut a trail of destruction over 90,000 square miles and displaced over a million people -- among them, thousands of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transpeople who are without homes, supplies, and necessary medications and hormones. Over the past three weeks, dozens of GLBT organizations have responded to the crisis -- some fundraising for Katrina survivors of all sexual orientations, some specifically lending a hand to people within the communities. "This Way Out" correspondent HEATHER KITCHING has the story of two such organizations [with comments by SALLY HUFFER of Houston's MONTROSE COUNSELING CENTER and THOMAS CHUPEIN of the San Francisco-based RAINBOW WORLD FUND]. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7:35 [Montrose Center hotline (713) 529-3211, www.montrosecounselingcenter.org; www.pridehouston.org; www.hglbtcc.org; www.nyac.youth.org; Rainbow World Fund: www.rainbowfund.org] Closing Credits/continuity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:30 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 29:00 ===================================== * =============================== STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", QUEER COMMUNITIES RALLY FOR KATRINA RELIEF, AND ARNOLD SAYS HE'LL "HASTA LA 'VETO'" CALIFORNIA MARRIAGE EQUALITY...
