David Lange, who in 1986 piloted legislation through Parliament there decriminalizing consensual adult homosexual acts and equalizing the age of consent; in a political demonstration unusual for India, more than 100 people in Mumbai colorfully protest Section 377 of the Penal code that still makes consensual homosexual sex in that country punishable by up to life in prison; Pride fills the streets of Tokyo, Tallinn, and Kathmandu; a new national lesbigay lobby group is launched Down Under, the Australian Coalition for Equality -- but South Africa's leading national queer advocacy group, the Lesbian and Gay Equality Project, is at least temporarily silenced by financial problems and internal issues, while that country's only nationally-broadcast lesbigay radio program, the weekly "Tuesday Night Show", is "bullied" off the air; China's first-ever undergraduate "gay studies" course will begin next month at Shanghai's Fudan University; and at a library in Malmö, Sweden, people can confront their prejudices face-to-face by "checking out" a minority group member, including a lesbian or a gay man, for an eye-opening chat in the library's café (written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to Graham Underhill, Rex Wockner, and Greg Gordon, and reported this week by CINDY FRIEDMAN & JON BEAUPRÉ) [9:30] + Georgina Beyer billboard [:20]. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9:50 [Nepal's Blue Diamond Mitini Lesbian Support Group email address is bluediamondmitini@yahoo.com; the Australian Coalition for Equality's Web site is www.coalitionforequality.org.au.] SEGMENT #2 - Who will defend the defenders of human rights? In many countries female activists -- and lesbians in particular -- face a special brand of persecution from their own repressive governments, from agents of others nations, and from multinational corporations. A coalition of international queer groups, women's organizations, and other supporters campaigned around these issues at the United Nations Commission on Human Rights meeting in GENEVA earlier this year. LORENA ESPINOZA, a lesbian feminist from the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, described her own experiences on a panel called "Defending Women Defending Rights." Espinoza's comments, with simultaneous translation by a UN interpreter, were recorded and excerpted by "This Way Out" correspondent UMA KALI SHAKTI, who's also the International Lesbian and Gay Association's Pacific Regional Representative . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8:00 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" Simmons Matching Challenge Promo . . . . . . . :30 SEGMENT #4 - GEORGINA BEYER is the NEW ZEALAND Member of Parliament for WAIRARAPA. She's also the world's first and most "out" transsexual politician. While in Brisbane, Australia in mid-August to address the "United Nations' International Conference On Engaging Communities," Beyer engaged in an extended conversation with "This Way Out" correspondent JOHN FRAME ["Queer Radio" on 4ZZZ-FM] on a wide range of topics. In this first of a two-part feature interview, Beyer updates her latest Parliamentary effort to ensure legal equity on the grounds of Gender Identity, expresses her concern over the medical assessment and treatment of transgender and intersex individuals, and opines on the importance of queer-openness by public figures . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7:50 Closing Credits/continuity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:40 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 29:00 ===================================== * =============================== STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", NEW ZEALAND M.P.
