the Government's bill to federally open legal marriage to same gender couples, 
while the Australian Green Party is pushing for marriage equality Down Under;  
in the U.S., the Oregon state Supreme Court invalidates some 3,000 marriages 
of gay & lesbian couples last year in Multnomah County [with comments by lead 
plaintiff MARY LI], while Connecticut's state House approves a bill to create 
Vermont-style civil unions -- albeit with a rider defining marriage as 
hetero-exclusive -- but the South Carolina Senate approves a constitutional ban on 
marriage equality previously passed with slightly different language in the 
state House ;  first-term Minnesota Republican state Senator Paul Koering and now 
former Lawrence, Kansas mayor Mike Rundle each identify themselves as gay men, 
while openly gay Nichi Vendola is elected to the presidency of the Italian 
state of Puglia;  Catalonia becomes the fourth Spanish state to open adoptions 
to same gender couples;  in Fiji, an Australian tourist and his local sex 
partner are released on bail while appealing their two-year prison sentences for 
consensual sodomy;  and the annual "Day of Silence" across U.S. school campuses 
is challenged this year by a rightwing Christian group's "Day of Truth"
