The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute has taken an initial step in that direction with the first phase of its study, "ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL & TRANSGENDER PEOPLE: A COMMUNITY PORTRAIT." Released in honor of the Lunar New Year, phase one is "A Report from New York's Queer Asian Pacific Legacy Conference, 2004." 124 conference attendees participated in the study, which selected a cross-section of men, women, and transpeople, who identified themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and queer. Policy Institute Research Director JASON CIANCIOTTO, study co-authors ALAIN DANG and MANDY HU, and GLENN D. MAGPANTAY of Gay Asian & Pacific Islander Men of New York "met the press" via a conference call on February 8th to present their findings [6:40] [www.thetaskforce.org] + "TWO" I.D. by openly-gay actor and author B.D. WONG [:20] . . . . . . 7:00 SEGMENT #3 - Living with the homophobia in society and the homophobia inside is one of the significant factors leading to a higher incidence of alcohol and drug addiction among gay men and lesbians. GUY KETTELHACK, the author of "VASTLY MORE THAN THAT: STORIES OF LESBIANS & GAY MEN IN RECOVERY" [Hazelden] knows first hand the challenges, triumphs, and setbacks they face. After asking Kettelhack to relate his own personal recovery story, This Way Out correspondent HEATHER KITCHING ["Queer FM"/CITR-Vancouver] talks with the prolific author about why "a fierce spiritual hunger" seems to be one of the few common denominators that characterize both those abusing drugs and alcohol and those in recovery, the horrific increase of crystal meth abuse by gay men in major U.S. cities, and Kettelhack's assertion that the road to sobriety leads to becoming more "conscious" and "more human". . . . . . . . . . . . 9:05 Closing Credits/continuity . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:20 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:55 ===================================== * =============================== STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT," A GROUNDBREAKING REPORT SURVEYS U.S. ASIAN QUEERS, AND LESBIGAY SUBSTANCE ABUSE RECOVERY IS ABOUT "VASTLY MORE THAN THAT"...
