Councilmember David Catania won't be there, either, because his delegate credentials were withdrawn after he publicly declared his opposition to George W. Bush's reelection following the president's announced support for the Federal Marriage Amendment; large demonstrations led by the Maori church group Destiny New Zealand peak in Wellington as over 5,000 there protest the country's pending Civil Union Bill; a South African lesbian couple's lawsuit to open marriage to same gender couples reaches the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein; Louise Charron and Rosalie Abella, the two new Justices appointed to the Canadian Supreme Court, which will review the marriage equality issue in October, each have lesbigay-supportive track records; a Brazilian election judge denies Eulina Rabelo Fernandes, the partner of the current Mayor of Vizeu Astrid Maria de Cunha the chance to run for the same post because national law prohibits one spouse from succeeding the other; the small contingent of openly gay & lesbian competitors at the Athens Olympics adds two more medals to the three silvers they won last week; and Australian activists angered by the recently passed ban on same gender marriage declare their secession from the country as the Gay & Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands (written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, REX WOCKNER and GREG GORDON, and reported this week by CINDY FRIEDMAN & RICK WATTS) [10:20] + "Audiofile" billboard (over "NewsWrap" outro music) [:10]. . . . . . 10:30 SEGMENT #2 - NEW YORK CITY COUNCILMEMBER MARGARITA LOPEZ already had quite a reputation as a firebrand of community-based activism when she became the first openly lesbian Puerto Rican elected to office in the United States. She came out in 1970 when that was not an easy thing to do, but she says it has informed her activism ever since. For two decades she's been a passionate advocate for the homeless and mentally ill, for fair working conditions, and for people living with AIDS in her Lower East Side district, while at the same time being an outspoken champion of queer rights. Lopez might well score another first for Latina lesbians if MANHATTAN voters elect her their Borough President later this year. Lopez chats with This Way Out's JON BEAUPRE about "mutual support" issues, what constitutes a "GLBT concern," the role of "role models," and working with her colleagues on the City Council [9:10] + "TWO" I.D. en Español by MARGARITA LOPEZ [:20]. . . . . . 9:30 SEGMENT #3 - A lesbian musician who brings jazz improvisation to the folk tradition (excerpts from "Little Mary" and "She Loves You" from KJ DENHERT's "GIRL LIKE ME"), a gay singer/songwriter who creates snapshots of our lives and times ("Say It's Alright" and "Dangerous Games" from PETER DONNELLY's "EXPRESS CAFÉ"), and a queer rock band that plays up the drama ("Justice" and "Leaving" from KEYTH LAWRENCE AND THE PURPLE CIRCLE's "FIGURES") are the stars of this month's "AUDIOFILE" [with comments by the artists, hosted by CHRIS WILSON & JD DOYLE, and written & produced with CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM]. . . . . . 6:35 = artist contact info = KJ DENHERT PETER DONNELLY KEYTH LAWRENCE Mother Cyclone Records Box 1439 35-15 30th Street - #2 PO Box 1316 Provincetown, MA 02657 Astoria, N.Y. 11106 Ossining, N.Y. 10562 pddonnelly@vue.org keyth@keythlawrence.com kdenhert@bestweb.net www.peterdonnelly.com www.keythlawrence.com www.kjdenhert.com Closing continuity/credits . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:15 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 29:00 ==================================== * ================================ STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT," LATINA LESBIAN COUNCILMEMBER MARGARITA LOPEZ "CORES" BIG APPLE POLITICS, AND "AUDIOFILE" MUSICIANS COOK UP CONTEMPORARY URBAN FOLK AND "ACOUSTIC MINESTRONE"...
