[*no opening teases this week*] . . :35 SEGMENT #1 "NewsWrap": Germany's Justice Minister announces the introduction of legislation to extend marriage rights to same gender couples; Switzerland's bill to create registered partnerships for gays & lesbians passes its final legislative hurdle, but a constitutional amendment to restrict marriage to heterosexual couples is introduced in the predominantly Catholic Pacific Ocean nation of the Marianas Islands, while leading Anglican conservatives around the world harshly condemn the affirmation of lesbian & gay relationships by last week's Canadian synod; the legal wheels begin turning against Begles Mayor Noel Mamere and the couple he married in last week's first-ever same gender wedding in France; charges against New Paltz, New York Mayor Jason West for marrying queer couples without licenses are dismissed, but a court order barring him from continuing to do so is made permanent, while the case against 2 Unitarian Universalist ministers who took the "marriage baton" from West and also face misdemeanor charges for performing same gender marriages will be heard later this month; New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg vetoes an Equal Benefits Bill, overwhelmingly passed by the City Council, that would require any group with a city contract of at least $100,000 to provide the same benefits to its workers' domestic partners as it offers the spouses of legally married employees; Jamaica's most visible gay rights advocate, Brian Williamson, is brutally murdered in his own home, which local activists and Amnesty International believe could have at least been partially motivated by homophobia; and Broadway's annual Tony Awards ceremonies -- and winners -- are once again very queer (written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, FENCEBERRY, REX WOCKNER, BRYAN GOEBEL, and GREG GORDON, and anchored this week by CHRISTOPHER GAAL & CINDY FRIEDMAN) [10:35] + "Letter To Steven" billboard (over "NewsWrap" outro music) [:10]. . . . . 10:45 SEGMENT #2 - It's becoming more and more dangerous to be gay or lesbian in UGANDA. Homosexuality is illegal there, as it is in most African nations, with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The church has contributed much to the hostile social and political atmosphere, particularly since the Episcopal Church USA consecrated openly gay Reverend Gene Robinson a bishop last year. Anglican leaders in Uganda have joined many others in condemning the confirmation, and the ecclesiastical tensions naturally spill over into the public sphere. At the same time, Ugandan lesbians and gays have been somewhat emboldened by news of liberation movements elsewhere in the world. As ERIC BEAUCHEMIN reports in the first of this 2-part feature, their courage comes with a price tag [with comments by a gay victim of government abuse, a human rights worker, and an Anglican priest who was excommunicated because of his homosexuality; originally broadcast on the Radio Netherlands program "Wide Angle"]. . . . . 8:00 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by Black gay poet/activist and AIDS casualty ESSEX HEMPHILL [:25] + As glowing eulogies for former U.S. President Ronald Reagan reverberate, National Gay & Lesbian Task Force Executive Director MATT FOREMAN shares an alternative remembrance in "A Letter To Steven" [4:05] + "Obituary", performed by PAUL HANDT from the 1987 TOM WILSON-WEINBERG musical "Ten Percent Revue"* (instrumental intro begins under last part of Foreman's "Letter") [3:30]. . . . . 8:00 [*www.voicenet.com/~weinberg/tenpercenttape.htm] Closing continuity/credits. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:30 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:50 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or *news stories* is encouraged to email Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon at TWOradio@aol.co ----------------------------- thanks! --------------------------------- STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT," HINTS OF LIBERATION FUEL ANTI-QUEER VIOLENCE IN UGANDA, AND A LEADING GAY ACTIVIST PROVIDES A REALITY CHECK ON REAGAN REMEMBRANCES...
