SEGMENT #1 ­  NewsWrap:  Tasmania boasts Australia's first state--level 
partnership registry as part of Relationships Bills giving same gender couples 
equality in well over 100 laws governing marriage, though passage requires 
compromises somewhat weakening parenting rights;  in largely Roman Catholic Colombia, 
however, the Senate rejects legal recognition of queer couples and civil 
rights protections for gays, lesbians & transgenders, despite support for the 
legislation by 3 former Presidents;  California's Senate follows previous approval 
in the Assembly of a bill considerably expanding the rights and 
responsibilities of the state's registered partners that, pending Governor Grey Davis' 
promised signature and the October 7th recall vote against him, will give same 
gender couples legal status in the U.S. second only to Vermont's civil unions;  
meanwhile, another bill -- to prohibit sexual orientation or gender identity 
discrimination or harassment in foster care -- also awaits Davis' signature, and 
his office is taking heat for bypassing protocol to sanction a small 
privately-funded paving stone at the California Veterans Memorial near the state 
Capitol that reads, "In honor of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Veterans 
Killed in Action";  with special guest openly-gay actor Sir Ian McKellen, a 
marching contingent of city police officers in uniform, a half-ton quarter 
mile-long rainbow flag and thousands tooting pink whistles at the climactic parade 
through its Gay Village, over 300,000 people participate in the annual EuroPride 
festival, held over 11 days this year in Manchester, England;  and it's 
uncertain if tongues were involved, but they're still wagging around the world over 
the open-mouthed kiss between Madonna & Britney Spears (and the kiss Madonna 
also exchanged with Christina Aguilera while live cameras were elsewhere) at 
the MTV Video Music Awards  [written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM
