Judging from the latest controversy involving anti-gay comments in baseball by Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Todd Jones, coming out of the closet as a pro ball player might be even harder. Even though the U.S. "national pastime" was once a leader in racial integration, over fifty years later there's still no openly gay player in the major leagues. One player who's come out of retirement in the "out"field is BILLY BEAN, who played major league baseball from 1987 through 1995. He broke in with the Detroit Tigers where he tied a major league record with 4 hits in his first game, and went on to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. After years of living secretly, Bean came out publicly as a gay man in 1999 during an interview with the "Miami Herald". He's now the author, with Chris Bull, of "GOING THE OTHER WAY: LESSONS FROM A LIFE IN AND OUT OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL" [Avalon Publishing Group]. This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE talked with Bean about his torturous journey out of the closet for this "out of the park" profile [includes an excerpt from Bean's controversial guest appearance with star ROBERT WUHL on the HBO sports comedy series "ARLI$$"] (intro music from "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" performed by CARLY SIMON and outro music from "Heart" from the motion picture version of "DAMN YANKEES"). . 9:50 [www.billybean.com] SEGMENT #3 Celebrity voice collage "TWO" I.D. [:25] + It sure wasn't funny at the time, but lesbian comedian VICKI WAGNER has turned her U.S. Air Force discharge -- from a top secret clearance post as Command Center Controller (in the room with the "red phone") -- into stand-up success. This Way Out's RITA GONZALES was able to stop laughing long enough to chat with Wagner about her aborted military career, and how she uses comedy to enlighten her mostly non-queer audiences about the stupidity of current U.S. policy toward its gay & lesbian servicemembers [with a live performance excerpt] [7:05]. . 7:30 [www.gayvideobiz.com] Closing Continuity/Credits. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:25 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:50 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or *news stories* is encouraged to email Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon at TWOradio@aol.co ----------------------------- thanks! --------------------------------- STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT, EX-BALLPLAYER BILLY BEAN STEPS UP TO THE PLATE WITH "COMING OUT" CONTROVERSY, WHILE LESBIAN COMEDIAN VICKI WAGNER LAUGHS LAST AT U.S. "MILITARY INTELLIGENCE"...
