USAGE LIMITED ONLY BY TIMELINESS OF NEWS CONTENT! => RUNDOWN <= Opening Teases/Theme Music/Intro Continuity . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:05 SEGMENT #1 NewsWrap: The U.K. announces that partners of British queer military personnel who die in the Iraq conflict will get spousal survival benefits, but U.S. queer servicemembers can only designate a "person of interest" to be notified if they're killed, which could result in their discharge under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" if they survive; queers join protests against the Iraq War around the world, including the U.S., where an Internet poll finds GLBT people more likely than their hetero counterparts to oppose it; in Britain, where gay activist Peter Tatchell is arrested after jumping in front of Prime Minister Tony Blair's motorcade; in Spain, where queer rights group Colegas publicly calls on the Pope to excommunicate war-supportive P.M. Jose Maria Aznar and his ruling Partido Popular party; and in Mexico City, where its first ever Lesbian March becomes an anti-war demonstration; South Africa's highest court again rules that same gender partners must be legally equal to heterosexually-married pairs; in the U.S., New Mexico state lawmakers approve bills to both ban sexual orientation discrimination and establish queer-inclusive hate crimes punishment enhancements; the Washington House passes a bill to prohibit sexual orientation discrimination, but it will be an uphill battle to get state Senate approval; a highly-contentious bill to repeal civil rights protections in Minnesota appears to be dead for this legislative session; and the Maryland House overwhelmingly passes a bill to add homophobic attacks to the state's hate crimes law; a member of Finland's Parliament issues an open letter of apology after lesbian-baiting his nation's President; and in the annual protest of the refusal of the sponsoring Ancient Order of Hibernians to allow GLBT-identified groups to march in New York City's St. Patrick's Day parade, which has become almost as much a tradition as the venerable parade itself, 4 traffic-blocking Irish Queers are arrested, while in Belfast the Northern Ireland Gay Rights Association protests the New York City exclusion (written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, FENCEBERRY, REX WOCKNER and GREG GORDON, and anchored by CINDY FRIEDMAN & RALPH RADEBAUGH) [10:10] + Rod McKuen billboard (over "NewsWrap" outro music) [:10] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10:20 SEGMENT #2 - Opera lovers are so familiar with the story of Verdi's "LA TRAVIATA", whose heroine is a courtesan dying from tuberculosis who has an out-of-wedlock lover, that it's hard to imagine the shock and controversy that the show originally created. A new translation by KRISTEN WOOLF staged by Opera Tazza at the Metta Projects Theater in Taos, New Mexico revitalized the opera's edgy storyline by bringing in contemporary issues of sexual orientation, gender identity, and AIDS. This Way Out correspondent KRISTINE TAYLOR [KRZA-Alamosa, CO] reports from Taos (with brief performance excerpts featuring actress FARAH FOBES) . . . . . 6:35 SEGMENT #3 "TWO" I.D. by comic actor TERRY SWEENEY (as "Nancy Reagan") [:15] + Singer, songwriter, actor and poet ROD McKUEN was a voice for peace and social justice throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s. His books have sold more than 75 million copies worldwide, and he's recorded over 200 albums, 67 of which went platinum. Perhaps best known for his songs "Seasons in the Sun" and "Jean" and his collaborations with diverse artists ranging from Jacque Brel to Frank Sinatra, in his work and activism McKuen has always championed gay rights. But in 1982 he fell into severe depression that led him to withdraw from the public scene. McKuen returned on March 19th, 2003 at a star-packed Hollywood party to announce his new "Prime of Your Life" concert tour that kicks off at New York City's Carnegie Hall on April 30th. It was an extraordinary gathering to celebrate a man of peace, ironically on the opening night of the U.S.-led war on Iraq. This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE was there to chat with McKuen, and with McKuen fans HARRY HAMLIN, DOM DELUISE, BUDDY HACKETT, PHYLLIS DILLER, RED BUTTONS, SALLY KIRKLAND and TOM TRUHE (with intro/outro music from McKuen's Anita Bryant-era queer-supportive anthem "Don't Drink the Orange Juice" from his album "Easy In") [10:15]. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10:30 [www.mckuen.com] Closing Continuity/Credits. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:20 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:50 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or *news stories* is encouraged to email Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon at TWOradio@aol.co ----------------------------- thanks! --------------------------------- STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", 50-YEAR EQUALITY ADVOCATE ROD MCKUEN PROUDLY RETURNS IN HIS PRIME, WHILE "LA (TRANS) TRAVIATA" TRIUMPHS IN TAOS...
