Bush pushes his "Charitable Choice" proposal to give social service U.S. tax dollars to "faith-based" groups, a secret plan to give the Salvation Army the right to discriminate against gays is exposed; a coalition of rightwing groups proposes adding a same-gender marriage ban to the U.S. Constitution, while Missouri Governor Bob Holden signs yet another state's so-called "Defense of Marriage" bill into law; a Nova Scotia judge rules that the provincial law barring adoption by unmarried couples violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms; police in Lucknow, India raid the offices of the Naz Foundation and Bharosa Trust, two HIV/AIDS groups, claiming they're fronts for a sex club and prostitution ring, arresting 8 staffmembers on charges of "propagating and indulging in unnatural sex"; bashers who attacked participants at Yugoslavia's first-ever gay pride event in Belgrade get little more than slaps on the wrist; Senegal's Interior Ministry tries to prevent a planned gay & lesbian gathering in Dakar; activists fight a mayoral decree barring gay & lesbian groups' participation at Budapest's annual "Pepsi Island" youth music event, billed as Hungary's "Woodstock"; the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is outraged at scant media attention to Wimbledon men's tennis winner Croatian Goran Ivanisevic calling a line judge a "faggot" during a post-tournament press conference, while openly-lesbian Amelie Mauresmo of France loses in the third round there; in Emmy nominations announced this week to honor U.S. television's best, NBC's gay-led "Will & Grace" again leads the pack in the comedy series category with a dozen, ABC's biopic of gay icon Judy Garland tops all miniseries and TV movie nominations with 13, and openly-lesbian comic Ellen DeGeneres, who will host the awards show in September, gets 2 nominations for her HBO special "The Beginning"; and Grammy-winning rocker Melissa Etheridge, who's been openly-lesbian for years, finally includes a love song specifically directed to a woman, called "It's Only Me", on her new album, "Skin" [written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, JASON LIN, BRIAN NUNES, CHRIS AMBIDGE, REX WOCKNER & GREG GORDON, and anchored by CINDY FRIEDMAN & JON BEAUPRÉ] . . . . . . . 9:45 SEGMENT #2 - "TWO" I.D. by queer pundit ANDREW SULLIVAN [:30] + billboard for "1970's Gay Rock" feature [:10] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :40 SEGMENT #3 - The theological views of retired Newark, New Jersey EPISCOPAL BISHOP JOHN SHELBY SPONG have created controversy since the late 1980's, when he ordained a partnered openly-gay man, and he created a major stir when he visited Australia last month, in part to promote his book, the autobiographical "Here I Stand: My Struggle for a Christianity of Integrity, Love and Equality". A request to have Spong speak in Brisbane Anglican churches on June 24th was denied, ostensibly because it happened to coincide with Archbishop Peter Hollingworth's last official church function before assuming the post of governor-general. Hollingworth's chaplain, Barry Greaves, told reporters that allowing Bishop Spong to preach would also appear to be giving his views the Church's official seal of approval. Rejected by his own denomination, Spong was able to speak at a Brisbane Uniting Church, after which he asked to attend the Stonewall Sunday service at the local queer-affirming Metropolitan Community Church, so that he could apologize directly to a group of gay and lesbian Christians for the homophobic religious leaders in their country. "This Way Out" correspondent JOHN FRAME [4ZZZ-FM/Brisbane] talked with him there about his conservative Southern upbringing, how the bible has historically been used to support racist, sexist and homophobic ideologies, the role of gay men in the Anglican and Catholic clergy, and why so-called "change ministries" are so dangerous (outro music from "Hymn" by ROMANOVSKY & PHILLIPS) . . 11:10 SEGMENT #4 - "TWO" I.D. by openly-gay Olympics diving champ GREG LOUGANIS [:10] + Gay and lesbian rock musicians have clearly become more "audible" in recent years, from independent bands like Pansy Division and The Butchies to mainstream performers like Melissa Etheridge and Sir Elton John. But there have been openly gay rock musicians almost since the time of Stonewall. Musical archaeologist LARRY ROBERTS [KPFA-FM/Berkeley] unearths a couple of rare queer tunes (excerpts from 1972's "Gay Is Good" by the British commune-based folk rock group EVERYONE INVOLVED, and 1973's "Looking For A Boy Tonight" by journeyman musician CHRIS ROBESON) and profiles the singers who recorded them (also includes an excerpt from "Closet Case" by VAGINAL DAVIS) [4:15] + brief promo for next week's "AudioFile" [:10] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4:35 Closing Continuity/Credits. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:30 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:40 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or *news stories* is encouraged to email Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon at TWOradio@aol.co ----------------------------- thanks! --------------------------------- STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", GAY-SUPPORTIVE RETIRED EPISCOPAL BISHOP JOHN SPONG SPEAKS FROM BEHIND THE "KANGAROO CURTAIN"...
