Bush to direct the White House Office of National AIDS Policy this week, Wisconsin's Scott Evertz becomes the first open gay ever appointed to a paid position in a GOP administration, while Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's hiring of openly-gay consultant Stephen Herbits to help recruit civilian staff for the Pentagon also irks right-wingers; the military career of openly-gay U.S. Army Reserve Lieutenant and Arizona GOP legislator Steve May officially comes to an end under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy; Massachusetts acting Governor Jane Swift surprises many by announcing her opposition to same-gender marriages or civil unions, even as 7 gay and lesbian couples sue the state for the right to marry; an Egyptian appeals court reduces the sentences of 2 men convicted of posting invitations for gay sex on their Web sites; Namibia President Sam Nujoma continues his threatening homophobic rhetoric by ordering that any gays or lesbians arriving in the country be immediately deported; Norway's Liberals will likely call for GLBT adoption equality in their party platform; a poll of more than 1,000 Czechs finds a clear majority opposing adoption rights for gays and lesbians, but supporting registered partnerships by a margin of almost 20%; complaints by local clergy shut down a planned drag show in the Philippines city of Bantayan; Thailand transsexuals will now be able to get dual "before" and "after" passport photos under a new government policy announced this week; and Ha Ri-soo becomes the first transsexual to appear in a TV commercial in Korea, but she needs an Adam's apple "stand-in" [written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, JASON LIN, BRIAN NUNES, CHRIS AMBIDGE, REX WOCKNER & GREG GORDON, and anchored by CINDY FRIEDMAN & CHASE SCHULTE] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10:40 SEGMENT #2 – Billboard for BYU suspensions feature [:15] + Lesbian, gay, bi and trans students have had to learn some painful lessons in recent weeks. It was homophobic harassment in school that brought a group of Florida teens to their state legislature on April 9th. They went to lobby for "safe schools" legislation, and to tell the lawmakers that harassment based on sexual orientation, unlike the usual kind of teasing many kids inflict on each other, can quickly escalate from name calling to beatings. Some of them discovered that they were no safer in the state Capitol than they are on their high school campuses, however, when 74-year-old Republican lawmaker ALLEN TROVILLION, who represents suburban Orlando, lectured a group of his youthful constituents on the biblical evils of the "gay lifestyle" and how they'd surely "pay" for their "sins". This Way Out's SUSAN GAGE reports from Tallahassee, with comments by Sarasota youth lobbyist SARA SMITH, Orlando high school student CHRIS VASQUEZ (who tried unsuccessfully to dialog with Trovillion), and Trovillion-supportive Republican House Speaker TOM FEENEY [4:35]. . . . . . . . . . . . . 4:50 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by AARON FRICKE (author of one of the very first books by and about gay youth, "Reflections of a Rock Lobster", with a musical intro from "Rock Lobster" by the B52s) [:15] + Last year BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY (BYU), the Mormon Church-owned institution based in Provo, Utah, went under the media microscope after suspending a student who had appeared on MTV's "The Real World" because, by living with members of the opposite sex, she had violated the school's Honor Code. BYU's Honor Code is a multi-paged contract that outlines behaviors to which a student at the university must conform. It covers areas as broad and vast as "using clean language" to "dress and grooming standards". Non-compliance can result in suspension. A part of the contract requires students to "encourage others to comply with the BYU Honor Code," including telling school authorities of any infractions by a fellow student. To deal with alleged infractions BYU has an Honor Code Office, where students can inform on their non-compliant roommates, and where those accused are brought before a committee. But how does the Honor Code Office determine that a violation has occurred – especially when it comes to what the Code refers to as "homosexual conduct"? What happens to those students? This Way Out correspondent GENA EDVALSON [KRCL-FM/Salt Lake City] explores complications of 2 recent student suspensions at BYU in a report that includes comments by MATTHEW GRIERSON (until last month a full scholarship BYU senior), CONNELL O'DONOVAN, author of the essay "Private Pain, Public Purges: A History of Homosexuality at Brigham Young University" (who describes one particularly sad case of BYU-promoted "aversion therapy" in the 1970s), and BYU spokesperson CARRI JENKINS [8:30] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8:45 SEGMENT #4 - A highly-edited version of "Crazy World", performed by MICHAEL CALLEN. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:45 Closing Continuity/Credits. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:40 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:50 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or *news stories* is encouraged to email Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon at TWOradio@aol.co ----------------------------- thanks! --------------------------------- STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", A MORMON CONDUCT CODE DIS-HONORS GAY BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, BUT HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE 'PHOBIC FLORIDA LAWMAKER ALLEN TROVILLION...
