LAURA" SCHLESSINGER has her syndicated gabfest being retooled and possibly re-fanged for the small screen, but the buzz also came from elsewhere on the broadcast dial this week, when NBC-TV's Emmy-winning political drama "THE WEST WING" had a Schlessinger-like character lambasted by no less than the President of the United States. Sexual orientation and bias crime-related themes have frequently been dealt with on "The West Wing," and a recent assassination attempt by a hate group had set the tone for the October 18th episode. In a scene near the end of the "The Midterms" episode, MARTIN SHEEN as "President Josiah Bartlet" begins to say a few words to a gathering of radio talk show hosts. He interrupts his remarks when he notices a woman in the audience he recognizes as radio advisor "Dr. Jenna Jacobs," and decides to take her on by (literally) "quoting chapter and verse" [5:05]. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5:30 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by openly-gay actor extraordinaire SIR IAN McKELLEN (with brief intro music from "An Actor's Life" from the Disney animated classic "Pinocchio") [:20] + Anti-lesbigay political rhetoric has reared its ugly head off and on in NAMIBIA, most notably since President Sam Nujoma first spoke out publicly against homosexuality in December 1996. A little more than a year later HOME AFFAIRS MINISTER JERRY EKANDJO called on the National Assembly to "curb the spread of homosexuality in society," and in late September, Ekandjo, who as Home Affairs Minister heads the nation's police force, stepped up his attacks by calling on new police recruits to "eliminate" gays and lesbians "from the face of Namibia." The RAINBOW PROJECT, which opened its very first offices in June, demands that the SWAPO-controlled government publicly reject Ekandjo's claims that gays and lesbians are not protected by the constitution, and according to Rainbow Project co-coordinator IAN SWARTZ, they've taken legal action to pursue that. Swartz talks with This Way Out's JACKIE CARVER (MVS Radio/Amsterdam) about Ekandjo's genocidal verbal volley and how his group - and the country's gays and lesbians - are dealing with it [9:30]. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9:50 Closing Continuity/Credits. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:30 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:40 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or *news stories* is encouraged to email "TWO" Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon at TWOradio@aol.co ----------------------------- thanks! --------------------------------- STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", GAYS AND LESBIANS RESPOND TO GENOCIDAL THREATS IN NAMIBIA, WHILE THE U.S. "WEST WING"'S TV PRESIDENT SLAMS A "DR.
