These gatherings give women a unique opportunity to party, play, learn, and push the envelope in a place where women do everything from stage lighting to cooking lentil soup. But it's not unusual for controversies to arise whenever envelopes get pushed. That's never been truer than at this year's 25th anniversary Michigan Women's Music Festival, when the "woman-born women only" admission policy is again being challenged. An estimated 8 thousand women are occupying the private 650-acre forest site -- along with a group of protesters who, since 1994, have set up "CAMP TRANS" outside the Festival entrance to lobby for transsexual inclusion in this annual celebration of womanhood. This report by This Way Out's LESLIE LAWSON [with production assistance by BARBARA DAB] includes comments by TONY BARRETO-NETO, a female-to-male transsexual and founder of TOPS, Transsexual Officers to Protect & Serve, who was asked to leave last year's event; STACY MONTGOMERY SCOTT, a transwoman member of the Boston chapter of Lesbian Avengers, who are supporting "Camp Trans"; DANIELLE, a self-identified "sexually reassigned woman", who is boycotting this year's Festival because she says the protestors create a "negative atmosphere"; and former teacher, Board member of the group Pride and Equality and well-known trans-activist DANA RIVERS [6:40] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6:45 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by women's music pioneer Margie Adam (intro'd by a brief excerpt from her "Best Friend/Unicorn Song") [:35] + As complicated as adolescence can be, gay and lesbian teens face a mixture of frustrating social conflicts. The harassment, disapproving glances and awkward stares can be bad enough. But on top of that, young lesbians and gays who are actively dating (just like their non-gay classmates) can feel uncomfortable at the traditional rites of passage -- such as the all-important high school prom. The solution, thought up by a gay student a few years back, was to hold an "ALTERNATIVE PROM" where every student, regardless of sexual orientation, is welcomed and comfortable. Similar events are now held in many places around the United States. "Straight-but-supportive" students JULIE JOY and ALLYSON DAY attended this year's alternative prom in Portland, Maine with tape recorders in hand, and sent us their story (with thanks to ROB ROSENTHAL, CLAIRE HOLMAN, JODY WILLIAMS, KRISTIN MOORES, and local alternative prom sponsor OUTRIGHT, and music from "You Spin Me Round" by DEAD OR ALIVE) [7:45]. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8:20 Closing Continuity/Credits. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:45 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:45 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or *news stories* is encouraged to email "TWO" Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon at TWOradio@aol.co ----------------------------- thanks! --------------------------------- STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", SUPPORTIVE TEENS SHARE LESSONS LEARNED AT THE GAY PROM, WHILE TRANSWOMEN "MENACE" THE MICHIGAN WOMEN'S MUSIC FESTIVAL...
