Bush's hometown of Midland [written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, BRIAN NUNES, JASON LIN, REX WOCKNER, CHRIS AMBIDGE, GREG GORDON & LUCIA CHAPPELLE, and anchored by CHASE SCHULTE and CINDY FRIEDMAN] . . . . . . . . . . . 10:35 SEGMENT #2 - As the REPUBLICAN PARTY held its National Convention the week of July 31st in Philadelphia, a record number of openly-gay and -lesbian delegates seemed to enjoy a more inclusive presence than ever before. Based on their convention experience, and a closed meeting by a dozen gay and lesbian Republicans with presidential nominee George W. Bush earlier this year, they believe the acceptance they've felt proves that the party's policies can change. Convention highlights for lesbigay GOP faithful included the first-ever speech by an openly-gay person – Arizona Representative Jim Kolbe (though international trade, not sexuality, was his subject) - and the media buzz surrounding Vice Presidential candidate Dick Cheney's openly-lesbian daughter Mary. However, gays and lesbians were never specifically mentioned in any of the convention speeches, and the party platform approved by the delegates continues its across-the-board opposition to any queer-supportive legislation. Reporter MATT ALSDORF summarizes the highs and lows for queer Republicans at the convention in a prepared report [4:25, including intro continuity and Urvashi Vaid billboard], and in a follow-up Q&A with This Way Out's GREG GORDON considers the impact and possible role of Mary Cheney in the campaign, describes the seeming contradiction of delegates' welcoming tone but opposition to pro-gay legislation, and analyzes the lesbigay Log Cabin Republican endorsement of the Bush/Cheney ticket [4:40] . . . . . . 9:05 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by lesbian-feminist humorist KATE CLINTON, preceded by "Norman Rockwell: The Lesbian Years", a performance excerpt from her Publishing Mills audiobook "Don't Get Me Started". . . . . 1:15 SEGMENT #4 - Partisan politics is just one approach to achieving social change, according to URVASHI VAID of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute. Vaid was in Philadelphia along with a broad range of progressive activists who gathered at "UNITY 2000" to highlight the key issues being ignored at the Republican Convention. In an informal interview with the Independent Media Center of Philadelphia, she critiques the gap between the GOP's public face and political positions, and discusses the challenges of articulating a shared vision to unite the various movements for social change . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5:25 Closing Continuity/Credits. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:30 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 29:00 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or *news stories* is encouraged to email "TWO" Coordinating Producer Greg Gordon at TWOradio@aol.co ----------------------------- thanks! --------------------------------- STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", REPORTS AND ANALYSIS FROM PHILADELPHIA ILLUMINATE THE INSIDE AND THE OUTSKIRTS OF REPUBLICAN POLITICS...
