"Operation Scoop", which expanded with considerable provincial funding to become "Project Guardian" and ultimately charged several men with unlawful sex with children, were described by activists as nothing less than a witch-hunt of a handful of gay men having private consensual sex with younger men of legal age. Earlier this year, Fantino was selected to be the new chief of police in Toronto, much to the chagrin of that city's queer community, who believe Fantino never adequately responded to the police problems they believe existed under his leadership in London. The Coalition For Lesbian And Gay Rights Ontario arranged for a closed-door session with Fantino at Toronto police headquarters on July 14th to reiterate those concerns, and to open lines of communication between the chief and the Toronto queer community, which wields considerably more political clout than London's. This Way Out's GREG GORDON spoke that day with CLARENCE CROSSMAN, who as a member of the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights Ontario and a spokesperson for HALO (the Homophile Association of London Ontario, Canada's oldest queer rights group) during the time of "Operation Scoop" and "Project Guardian", participated in meetings with Fantino both in London in the mid-1990s, and this week in Toronto. Crossman discusses the so-called "investigations" in London, meetings with Fantino at that time, and what happened at this week's session with Fantino in Toronto [7:10] + "TWO" I.D. by openly-queer British rocker Tom Robinson (with a brief excerpt from his "Glad To Be Gay") [:30] . . 7:45 SEGMENT #3 - For more than seventeen years, cartoonist ALISON BECHDEL has reflected and affectionately critiqued the lesbian community in her "DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR" comic strip, syndicated in more than 50 publications in the U.S >. and Canada. When she's not working on the comic strip, the Vermont-based Bechdel is a popular guest speaker. She visited the University of Illinois this spring to talk about her loveable but flawed characters and about her own evolution as an artist and a lesbian. This Way Out's KIMBERLIE KRANICH prepared this profile (includes dramatized excerpts from some "DTWOF" strips). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8:10 (In addition to the dozens of print publications that carry Alison Bechdel's "Dykes to Watch Out For," the comic strip can be seen online at firebrandbooks.com and at planetout.com.)
