An unusual "notification" personally approved by Pope John Paul II -- an action just one step below excommunication -- prohibits Gramick and Nugent from "any pastoral work involving homosexual persons", such as the NEW WAYS MINISTRY they founded and led for over 30 years. Their sin was a failure to "faithfully convey" the Church's teachings that homosexual acts are "intrinsically evil". They've received support from such groups as Dignity, the activist organization of lesbian and gay Catholics, and from some 4,500 Catholics who signed an ad in t he National Catholic Reporter calling on U.S. bishops to rally to the cause (which didn't happen). Thus far, Rome has turned a deaf ear. Gramick and Nugent have found some loopholes in the gag order, however, and have taken every opportunity to speak out in spite of it. One such occasion was a January 26th appearance at Metropolitan Community Church-San Francisco, carefully scheduled after the worship service to circumvent the ban. This Way Out's BILL TRAVIS was there, and talked with Gramick and Nugent about how they began their ministry to queer Catholics, the 10-year process that led to the Vatican order, and their future plans (intro/outro music from "Down At Stonewall" by JALLEN RIX) [10:05] + "TWO" I.D. by Chastity Bono (over fading outro music) [:10] . . . . 10:20 SEGMENT #3 - JON GILBERT LEAVITT's independent CD single "PRIDE" traces the queer community's journey through the 20th Century to a contemporary beat.
