The move comes after lesbian and gay former servicemembers successfully brought their cases to the European court -- leaving the Blair government little choice in the matter. But, as JUDY ASLET [Pacifica Network News] reports from London, it could still be some time before gays and lesbians are fully accepted in Britain's armed forces (with comments by SIMON LANGLEY, a former military helicopter pilot and one of the EuroCourt plaintiffs) (intro music from "Military Madness" by GRAHAM NASH) [2:55] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3:00 SEGMENT #3 - U.S. President Bill Clinton has finally acknowledged that his "Don't Ask/Don't Tell" policy in the military might be "out of whack". His recent remarks follow the premeditated murder conviction of Calvin Glover for the brutal baseball bat bashing murder of perceived-to-be-gay fellow soldier Barry Winchell at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, apparently prompting first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's opposition to the policy in her New York senatorial bid, an earlier call for dumping "DA/DT" by Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley, and then subsequently by his rival for the nomination, Vice President Al Gore. The renewed rhetoric may be a futile exercise in election year politics, however, since the conservative Congressional leadership has made it pretty clear that any change in the near future is unlikely -- all of which offers little consolation to lesbians and gay men currently serving their country in the U.S. armed forces. DON RUSH [Pacifica Network News] has an update from Washington (including comments by former Naval officer KEITH MEINHOLD and Ft. Campbell Private JAVIER TORRES and the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force's REBECCA ISAACS) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . >. . . . . . . . . . 4:05 SEGMENT #4 - "TWO" I.D. by comedian Bob Smith [:10] + BOB SMITH, the first openly gay comedian to star in his own HBO special and appear on NBC-TV's "The Tonight Show", offers an unapologetic take on growing up gay in his new book "Way To Go Smith", the follow-up to his 1998 Lambda Literary Award-winning "Openly Bob". Smith has also written for numerous TV shows, and as a stand-up comic tours extensively, performing across the country. He recently sat down with This Way Out's STEVE PRIDE to share his very original takes on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (includes Smith reading 2 excerpts from "Way To Go Smith", and intro/outro music from "Constant Thing(I Was Raised a Straight Boy)" by JESSE HULTBERG) [8:25] . . . . . . . . >. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8:35 CLOSING CREDITS/CONTINUITY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1:35 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28:50 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or NEWS stories is encouraged to email "T.W.O."
