**************************************************************** THIS WAY OUT RUNDOWN for Program #608, distributed 11/22/99 (hosted by Lucia Chappelle and Greg Gordon) "TWO" FEEDS EACH MONDAY @ 14:30-14:59 ET on PRSS DIGITAL FREQUENCY A73.5 and EVERY TUESDAY from 14:00-14:29 ET on Pacifica`s KU band (also distributed on audiocassette by mail to non-satellite stations) ON THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM: A fond farewell to "Naked Civil Servant" Quentin Crisp, dead at 90; 19th Century gay campaigner John Addington Symonds in love and letters; Partner-blessing U.S. Methodist minister convicted by Church court, Couples recognition considered in Scotland, Colombia and Spain, New South Wales nixes age of consent equalization, and other LGBT news from around the world *>================> PROGRAM CONTENT ADVISORY <==================<* Segment #2 is the second of a 3-part biography of John Addington Symonds, a turn of the century British political theorist, poet and gay rights pioneer. Much of his poetry excerpted during this segment celebrates the physical beauty of his male lovers; no specific sexual activity is recounted (unless describing a few kisses would qualify), no sexual organs are mentioned, and no sexually-graphic language of any kind is used. Nevertheless, you may wish to preview this segment before broadcast. -------------------------------- * ---------------------------- ...AND A REMINDER: (for those who regularly use "Newswrap" as a stand-alone segment) There will be no "NewsWrap" on next week's "This Way Out" (11/29/99, #609) so that our staff can enjoy some rare time off for the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be a full half-hour "This Way Out" program as usual, but without a "NewsWrap" segment. Also, there will be no "NewsWrap" on the last "This Way Out" program for 1999 (#613, to be distributed 12/27/99) -- that program will be the annual "Best Of AudioFile" all lesbigay music show, with Chris Wilson and Pam Marshall playing cuts from their favorite CD's of the past year. *=======================================================* Opening Teases/Theme Music/Intro Continuity ........................ 1:05 SEGMENT #1 - NewsWrap: Same-gender-couples-blessing U.S. Methodist minister Jimmy Creech is stripped of his ordination by a Church Court; domestic partner benefits are announced by the U.S.-based Prudential Insurance Company and the CBS Corporation, and approved by the California State University system, while the Massachusetts state Sentate passes a bill to extend same-gender partner benefits to state emloyees and to allow local governments to do the same, but in an obvious attempt to circumvent a domestic partner benefits lawsuit against the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's GOP-dominated legislature enacts a last-minute measure banning local governments from forcing state-run schools to extend such benefits; recognition of gay and lesbian couples is under consideration in Scotland and in Spain's Balearic Islands, while a Colombian court determines which judicial branch will hear a gay widower's inheritance dispute with his late partner's family; California's Democratic Governor Gray Davis scraps anti-lesbigay adoption policies in force during the 16 years his Republican predecessors held that office; New South Wales rejects age of consent equalization, but the British Queen announces that sexual equality is on the legislative agenda there, as is repeal of the infamous Thatcher-era Section 28, which prohibits local governments from funding anything construed to "promote" homosexuality; British direct action group OutRage! tries to include lesbigay servicemembers in the annual Remembrance Day observance in London; a judge rebuffs a defamation lawsuit filed by the family of the late Clayton Hartwig, whom the U.S. Navy falsely described as a suicidal gay man responsible for the 1989 explosion aboard the U.S.S. Iowa that killed 45 other sailors; accused U.S. Army Private Calvin Glover pleads not guilty in the apparently anti-gay-motivated murder of fellow soldier Barry Winchell at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; U.S. Congressional Republicans conclusively scuttle any chances for passage during this legislative session of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act; British activist Peter Tatchell and 2 other OutRage! members plead not guilty to charges related to their attempted citizens' arrest of vociferously homophobic Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe while he was on a shopping trip in London on October 30th; and 1950's-era British gay rights advocate Peter Wildeblood dies at the age of 76 [written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, BRIAN NUNES, JASON LIN, MARTIN RICE, REX WOCKNER, CHRIS AMBIDGE, ANDRES DUQUE, GREG GORDON & LUCIA CHAPPELLE, and anchored by KEVIN RILEY and CINDY FRIEDMAN] ......... 10:45 SEGMENT #2 - Billboard for Quentin Crisp Obit/Jan '99 interview [:05] + Despite the notoriety of the gay "bourgeois radical" intellectuals and literati of his time like Oscar Wilde and Edward Carpenter, no one else was advocating for the repeal of anti-gay British laws like JOHN ADDINGTON SYMONDS. Symonds laid out his political rationale for legal reform in his 1891 "A Problem In Modern Ethics," but his poetry and other writings bespeak another kind of gay liberation. In fact, in the second of HUGH YOUNG's 3-part audio biography, be aware that some samples of Symonds' work -- including his celebratory descriptions of the male body and gay love -- may still be controversial today [6:50] ............................ 6:55 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by Olympics diving champ Greg Louganis [:05] + Professional bon vivant, occasional actor, and household-word homosexual QUENTIN CRISP would have been 91 years old on Christmas Day, but he passed away on November 20th in Manchester, England, where he was set to launch a tour of his one-man show. The author of "The Naked Civil Servant" was catapulted to fame by the Thames Television production of his book -- as was its star, John Hurt -- and he remained in the limelight after moving to New York City at the age of 74 and writing other popular tomes, including "Resident Alien" and "How To Have A Lifestyle". Crisp once said of his funeral arrangements, "Just drop me into one of those black plastic bags and leave me by the trash can" -- but we're going to do a bit more than that, as we revisit STEVE PRIDE's conversation with him earlier this year, during which the controversial Mr. Crisp discusses some of his life experiences and his philosophy of life (intro/outro music from "An Englishman In New York" by STING) [8:45] ....................... 8:50 CLOSING CREDITS/CONTINUITY ......................................... 1:25 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME ................................................. 29:00 ----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or NEWS stories is encouraged to email "T.W.O."
