Irmo Principal Gerald Witt had cancelled the show following parent complaints about the popular duo`s sexual orientation. About 200 students walked out of their classes for a demonstration at the time the concert would have been held. Eight student demonstrators who refused to return to class were suspended for eight days, and two others for shorter periods -- a punishment that, according to the students, was both unexpected and considerably harsher than what they had been told they would receive for engaging in their peaceful protest. Assisted by the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina, five of the students went to court, charging that their First Amendment right to free speech had been violated. One of those students was 11th grader Megan Collier. Reporter AMY GOODMAN [excerpted from Pacifica Radio`s "Democracy Now"] spoke last week with Megan, and with her father Tommy Collier -- who`s also a 22-year veteran teacher at the school -- about the future of the lawsuit against Irmo High, and more generally about this campus showdown between the principal and the students` principles (brief intro music from "It`s Alright", equally-brief outro music from "Shame On You", both from the current INDIGO GIRLS CD "Shaming of the Sun") [8:10] .............................................................................. ........................................... 8:25 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by openly-gay actor Wilson Cruz [:05] + Many lesbian and gay teens -- and some who are not but are perceived to be -- are regularly harassed, threatened, and assaulted on school campuses almost everywhere -- and all too often within view of a teacher or other school administrator who does nothing to stop it. In this report from East High School by KAT SNOW [KUER-FM/Salt Lake City] a few queer teens -- and one who isn`t but appears to be -- describe their experiences, and several adults discuss ways in which schools can be made safer for these students: Doug Wortham of the Utah chapter of GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network); state education attorney Doug Bates; Doug Haldeman, chair of the American Psychological Association`s Committee on Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual Concerns; attorney David Buckle of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund; and East High School Principal Kay Petersen [7:30] ............................................................................. ........................................... 7:35 CLOSING CREDITS/CONTINUITY .............................................................................. ............ 1:15 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME .............................................................................. ............................ 28:45 ==============================*================================= STATION PROMO COPY: ANNCR: NEXT TIME ON "THIS WAY OUT", A SOUTH CAROLINA STUDENT AND HER DAD DISCUSS THE INDIGO GIRLS, CENSORS AND HOMOPHOBES, WHILE UTAH TEENS AND CARING ADULTS DEMAND A SAFER EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT.
