************************************************************* THIS WAY OUT Rundown Program #518 (03/02/98) ************************************************************* ATTN SATELLITE STATIONS: * Due to an oversight at NPR Distribution, the regular Monday transmissions of "This Way Out" for the month of March had not been scheduled. This problem has been corrected -- so please be assured that "This Way Out" will be fed at the usual time (14:30-14:59 ET) on the usual digital frequency (A73.5) each Monday this month -- and that included TODAY`s program. ------------------ * Please note that there is a PROGRAM-SPECIFIC :60 PROMO at the START of this week`s feed! The complete running order is as follows: 00:00 to 01:00 PROMO for Program #518 (voice ends @ 00:50, theme music continues as bed for :10 from 00:50 to 01:00 for LOCAL ANNCR V/O) 01:00 to 01:10 :10 of BLANK TAPE 01:10 to 29:05 THIS WEEK`S PROGRAM (total program time = 27:55) (see RUNDOWN below) We will usually NOT have time to include a program-specific promo, and will only be able to do so when the total program running time is 27:55 or less. More often than not the total program time approaches the maximum 29:00 allowable for a "half hour" satellite feed, leaving no time for a promo. When we DO include a promo, it will ALWAYS be the FIRST item fed, followed by :10 of blank tape, BEFORE the actual program begins. ========================================================================= == ****** PROGRAM #518 RUNDOWN ****** Opening Teases/Theme Music/Intro Continuity ....................................................... 1:05 SEGMENT #1 - NewsWrap: An Alaska judge orders his state to prove it has a "compelling interest" in denying gays and lesbians the right to marry; the Hawai`i legislature decides to "Con-Con" the voters again; the European Parliament adopts a resolution strongly supporting equal treatment of same- gender couples, while two British transsexuals take their discrimination complaints to the European Court of Human Rights; 3 men survive Islam- dictated executions for homosexuality in Afghanistan; Zimbabwe`s High Court grants former President Canaan Banana permission to leave the country for unspecified medical treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., despite the 11 pending charges against him of sexual assaults against other men; San Francisco`s gay Alexander Hamilton American Legion post settles its long-running discrimination lawsuit against other units of the national veterans group out of court; a record 700,000 in-person spectators -- and a first-ever World Wide Web audience -- view over 7,000 marchers and 270 floats at the 20th annual Sydney (Australia) Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade; openly-gay pop music superstar Elton John`s fabulous week includes winning a Grammy for Best Male Vocal Performance (for his "Candle In The Wind 1997") and being formally invested as a Knight Bachelor by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace; and after 20 wins in 22 bouts in the provinces, 16-year-old cross-dressing Muay Thai kickboxer Parinya Kiatbusaba advances to the bigtime in Bangkok and promptly batters his apparently ugly opponent [compiled & written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, BRIAN NUNES, JASON LIN, REX WOCKNER, MARTIN RICE, ALAN REEKIE, HEIN VERKERK, LUCIA CHAPPELLE & GREG GORDON; anchored by CINDY FRIEDMAN & DAVID HUNT] .......................................................... 9:50 SEGMENT #2 - Billboard for "AudioFile" feature [:05] + Last July, Britain`s nationally-distributed "Sun" newspaper carried an article that claimed, "it`s a fact -- the life expectancy of a gay man without HIV is a shocking 43 years." Columnist ANNE ATKINS` story went on to proclaim that gay men are "alarmingly" 17 times more likely to be pedophiles than hetero men. Atkins cited "research" by roundly-discredited American psychologist Paul Cameron as the source for her most inflammatory assertions. The British Press Complaints Commission (PCC) launched a formal investigation following several complaints about the article, and recently issued a rare censure of Atkins. REBECCA SANDLES [BBC Radio 5 Live`s "Out This Week"] referees an in-studio debate between Atkins -- who continues to support the credibility of Cameron`s "research" -- and PAUL BARNES, one of the complainants, and former Chair of the Tory Campaign for Homosexual Equality (TORCH). A brief post-debate comment follows from SUSAN ROBERTS, Director of Complaints at the Press Complaints Commission, denying Atkins` claim (made during the preceding discussion) that the PCC failed to read the original "research" she submitted in defense of her article before they decided to rule against her ("Extra! Extra! Read All About It!" intro music from THE WHO`S rock opera "Tommy") [9:05] .............................................................................. ................. 9:10 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by openly-gay actor Wilson Cruz [:10] + The mainstream U.S. music industry has handed out its Grammys, but gay and lesbian recording artists are no doubt looking forward to the 2nd Annual GAY/LESBIAN AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS in New York City on March 9th. On this month`s "AudioFile", CHRIS WILSON & CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM [with thanks to PAM MARSHALL] talk with GLAMA nominees TOM ROBINSON and disappear fear songwriter/lead vocalist SONIA RUTSTEIN (with excerpts from their CDs, and by fellow nominee CATIE CURTIS), and also discuss some of the other nominations [6:15] .............................................................................. .............................................................. 6:25 CLOSING CREDITS/CONTINUITY ............................................................................ ........... 1:25 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME .............................................................................. ........................... 27:55 -----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or NEWS stories is encouraged to email "T.W.O."
