During a telephone call the month before, one of her volleyball players had asked Weaver if she is a lesbian. Weaver said yes. She says it was the one and only time she had ever discussed her sexual orientation with anyone in the groups named in the gag order. With the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, Weaver filed a lawsuit in federal court charging that the school board is infringing on her first amendment right to free speech. In December, a newly-formed Salt Lake City-based group, Citizens For Moral And Legal Values, filed its own lawsuit alleging that Weaver is unfit to teach, and demanding revocation of her teaching certificate. In a telephone interview this week, Weaver described the latest developments in her case, and discussed how she and her partner Rachel Smith -- and her students -- are coping with the glare of the national media spotlight [with thanks to Pam Marshall, Rita Gonzalez & Christopher David Trentham-"imru"/KPFK-Los Angeles] [3:50] ... 4:00 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by Doug Stevens & The Out Band (with an excerpt from their "Out In The Country") [:35] + With the Winter Olympics in full swing, Nagano, JAPAN has become like a second home to sports telespectators around the world. But what kind of home does the heavily tradition-bound country offer its gays and lesbians? In this first of a 2-part report originally produced for Radio Netherlands, ERIC BEAUCHEMIN explores the blossoming lesbigay rights movement in Japan, which has been slowed by the clash between public activism and a "don`t rock the boat" cultural demand for societal "harmony" [includes comments by one of the first gay men to come out publicly in Japan in the mid-1970`s; a native Japanese and American-born lesbian couple; and a man whose AIDS activism facilitated his coming out [11:20] .................................................. 11:55 CLOSING CREDITS/CONTINUITY ............................................................................. ........... 1:20 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME .............................................................................. ............................ 27:50 -----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or NEWS stories is encouraged to email "T.W.O."
