************************************************************** THIS WAY OUT Rundown Program #504 (11/24/97) ************************************************************** Opening Teases/Theme Music/Intro Continuity ........................................................ 1:10 SEGMENT #1 - NewsWrap: Despite the high profile opposition of Republican Governor Pete Wilson, the Board of Regents of the University of California approves health benefits for the partners of the statewide system`s gay and lesbian employees; a lesbian priest`s partnership registration has put the spotlight on the separation of Church and state in Norway; openly-gay Harvard chaplain Peter Gomes and UFMCC founder Rev. Troy Perry are among some 120 religious leaders honored at a White House breakfast; German Chancellor Helmut Kohl`s ruling Christian Democrats, the only major national political party without a lesbigay caucus, now has one; Alberta`s Minister for Family and Social Services upholds the Canadian province`s ban on gay and lesbian foster parents; Western Australia`s Legislative Council delays action on bills to equalize the state`s gay age of consent and to protect lesbians and gays from discrimination; the Auckland, New Zealand City Council`s denial of funding, citing a controversial lesbian S/M float last time, will still not rain on the annual gay and lesbian HERO parade; with gay men at the forefront, Asian sex workers speak out at a regional AIDS conference and organize 3,000 strong in Calcutta to change laws and end police harassment; a recently-discovered poem by fabled gay Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen will receive its first publication in an elementary school newspaper; and misprints in the Vatican`s house organ "Osservatore Romano", attributing pro-queer statements to one of the Church`s most outspoken opponents of lesbigay rights, is blamed on a computer glitch -- or the Forces of Evil [compiled & written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, JIM BIRKITT, REX WOCKNER, GREG GORDON & LUCIA CHAPPELLE, and anchored by CINDY FRIEDMAN and TORY CHRISTOPHER] ................................................................... 10:15 SEGMENT #2 - Billboard for Kepner tribute [:05] + One of the hottest controversies within the gay and lesbian rights movement is drawing new political lines, as self-avowed "queer theorists" challenge the works of a school of gay philosophers they call "neo-conservatives". While the term "neo-con" is less than descriptive of the range of political views represented in this group, the writers in question have in common a critique of gay male culture that has outraged their opponents, who held a national "Sex Panic!" summit earlier this month. This Way Out`s JON BEAUPRE [with production assistance by DAVID SCHERZER] reports from San Diego, with comments by summit organizers Tony Valenzuela and Steven Gendin, former Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund staff attorney Mickey Wheatley, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation`s Dan Romsberg, and -- although he wasn`t there -- one of the so-called "neo-con" writers under attack, Gabriel Rotello [6:25] .............................................................. 6:30 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by author Armistead Maupin ("Tales Of The City") (with unauthorized Jesse Helms "endorsement") [:15] + The worldwide gay and lesbian movement lost one of its pioneering activists on November 15th when historian and archivist Jim Kepner died in Los Angeles at the age of 74. This Way Out`s PAM MARSHALL [with production assistance by CHRIS WILSON and CHRISTOPHER DAVID TRENTHAM] prepared this tribute, which includes comments by Kepner himself, fellow pioneers Harry Hay and Morris Kight, ONE Institute President Rev. Flo Fleischman, Board member Ernie Potvin, Executive Director John O`Brien, and former "Advocate" columnist and longtime friend Jeannie Barney (intro music from "My Buddy" and outro music from "I`ll Be Seeing You" by THE FLIRTATIONS) [9:20] .............................................................................. ............................................................... 9:35 CLOSING CREDITS/CONTINUITY .............................................................................. ............ 1:25 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME .............................................................................. ............................ 28:55 -----------------------------Please note-------------------------------- Anyone with questions, suggestions, or NEWS stories is encouraged to email "T.W.O."
