************************************************* THIS WAY OUT Rundown Program #493 (9/8/97) ************************************************* Opening Teases/Theme Music/Intro Continuity ...................... 1:15 SEGMENT #1 - NewsWrap: Openly-gay Senator David Norris could be a serious candidate for the Irish presidency; Mexico City regulates its thousands of sex workers of both genders, but will only allow male and transgendered practitioners to work a single district; yet another U.S. federal appeals court upholds "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"; the Dutch Supreme Court rejects a lesbian couple's bid to co-adopt each other's children; New Zealand's highest court hears arguments in 3 lesbian couples' lawsuit to be legally married; the Chicago suburb of Oak Park becomes the first municipality in Illinois to establish a registry for gay and lesbian domestic partners; Reverend Dorothy McRae-McMahon, the second highest-ranking official in Australia's Uniting Church, under fire from the denomination's most conservative elements since coming out as a lesbian during the church's national meeting in July, resigns her position saying the ongoing attacks on her had been "distracting the Church from its real work"; South Africa's Broadcasting Complaints Commission upholds charges of bias against a Christian-oriented TV program featuring a panel discussion that unanimously condemned homosexuality as a sin; and some skeptics are concerned that Chicago's multi-million-dollar plans to dress up the city's predominantly-gay North Halsted area with rainbow lights and towers are really a drag [compiled and written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to GRAHAM UNDERHILL, BRIAN NUNES, MARTIN RICE, MARK PROFFITT, REX WOCKNER, LUCIA CHAPPELLE & GREG GORDON, and anchored by CINDY FRIEDMAN and TORY CHRISTOPHER] .............................................................................. ........... 9:25 SEGMENT #2 - Billboard for TJ Cultural Festival & Elton/Diana features [:10] + The number of gay and lesbian pride celebrations around the world has continued to increase each year, and now total more than 300. In many areas, pride events have become about as predictable as the morning sunrise, so when we hear about a city planning to hold its first-ever celebration, it rekindles in the jaded that sense of empowerment such events really represent. We sent TWO producer JON BEAUPRE back to his home town of Reno, Nevada in late August to report on that city's inaugural celebration of pride [3:40] .............................................................................. ................. 3:50 SEGMENT #3 - Billboard for Elton/Diana feature [:05] + Combining the arts, AIDS, homosexuality and politics could make for a volatile mixture. Put them together in Tijuana, Mexico and you're got the 4th Annual Lesbian & Gay Cultural Festival. TWO's ROSS PORTER talks with some of the organizers about the unprecedented governmental cooperation the Festival enjoys, and the important role the arts play in facilitating social change (brief instrumental intro/outro music by LOS LOBOS) [3:55] .............................................................. 4:00 SEGMENT #4 - TWO I.D. by famed gay writer Edmund White . :30 SEGMENT #5 - Queer communities around the world figured prominently in the intensely emotional reactions to the untimely death of Diana, Princess of Wales. In many cities and towns, memorial marchers carried "candles in the wind" and other symbolic tributes through lesbigay neighborhoods to honor one of the first luminaries to publicly -- and literally -- embrace people with AIDS, as well as sexual minorities in general. Diana was an avid fan of openly-gay pop superstar Elton John, and the two had become close friends over the years. John talked with Barbara Walters about that friendship, his invitation to sing at the funeral, and his plans to help keep Diana's memory alive through the charities she was so devoted to, in an interview that aired on the ABC-TV newsmagazine "20/20" the night before Diana was laid to rest -- we have brief excerpts. This report [anchored by TWO's LUCIA CHAPPELLE and GREG GORDON] concludes with what were, for most of those inside and outside Westminster Abbey, and the estimated 2 billion people around the world who experienced the funeral on television and radio, the most moving moments in the service: John's emotional rendition of his 1970's hit "Candle In The Wind", rewritten with longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin, to honor the memory of his friend Diana, "the people's princess" .............................................................................. ..................... 8:25 CLOSING CREDITS/CONTINUITY ........................................................ 1:15 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME ........................................................................ 28:40 ----------------------Please note------------------------ Anyone with questions, suggestions, or NEWS stories is encouraged to email "T.W.O."
