detailed warning label on claims that so-called "reparative therapy" can
change queers into happy heteros;  Gil Alexander-Moegerle, a co-founder of
the rabidly anti-queer Focus On The Family, believed to be the largest
right-wing organization in the U.S., apologizes to gays and lesbians for the
sins of Focus leader James Dobson;  an Equal Opportunity Tribunal in New
South Wales rules that the Australian state's Anti-Discrimination Act does
not protect heterosexuals;  Hawai'i's Attorney General has determined that
the state's recently-enacted reciprocal beneficiaries law does not require
the majority of Hawai'ian companies to provide health coverage and other
spousal benefits to those workers;  activists charge that some of the 40 men
arrested during a late July gay bar raid in Russia were brutalized by police
during their detention;  Algerian gays are targeted for death by
fundamentalist leader Abou el Moundhir of the Groupe Islamic Armee;  separate
undercover police stings lead to the arrests of 46 men cruising a San Diego,
California park, 21 "lewd and lascivious" men in a Miami Beach, Florida gay
bar, and the chief spokesperson for the U.S. Secretary of the Navy in
Annapolis, Maryland;  and the annals of Australian naval history include a

SEGMENT #2 -  Billboard for AudioFile feature [:05]  +  The San
Francisco-based International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission -- or
IGLHRC -- presents the Filipa De Souza Awards to recognize the work of
activists around the world who are advancing the cause of civil rights and
equality for sexual minorities, often in the face of persecution, arrest and
torture.  The award is named for a 16th century Brazilian former nun, who was
tried, punished, and persecuted for her own same-sex loves -- and the lives
of this year's honorees have been no less dramatic.  TWO's JON BEAUPRE brings
us the stories [and voices] of Turkey's Demet Demir, Albania's Gence Jelax,
and Elizbeth Kahxas of the Sister Namibia Collective; and talks with IGLHRC
program director Sydney Levy about the basic themes uniting queer rights
activism internationally [6:55]
