It was the first full scale battle in the U.S. between the burgeoning religious right and a politically-naive gay & lesbian community, and the first to get the attention of the national -- even international -- mainstream media. Former beauty queen, pop singer and Florida Orange Juice spokesperson Anita Bryant led the repeal effort, warning that homosexuals couldn't reproduce so they had to recruit youngsters into their immoral lifestyle. Many incredulous gays and lesbians couldn't understand how anyone would believe that line of reasoning, but were shocked out of their closets by the over 2-to-1 majority voting for repeal, taking to the streets to protest in several cities in the days following "Orange Tuesday". TWO's LUCIA CHAPPELLE and GREG GORDON use archival sound to chart the early days of a battle that continues to this day (includes music performed by ANITA BRYANT, ROD McKUEN and MARY WATKINS) .............................................................................. .................... 9:45 SEGMENT #3 - "PERFECT ENEMIES: THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT, THE GAY MOVEMENT AND THE POLITICS OF THE 1990's" examines the sometimes striking similarities that have characterized these two political opponents since the mid-1970's, and suggests that the rhetoric needs to be turned down on both sides before any reasonable dialog can occur. In the first of a 3-part feature interview, TWO's JOSY CATOGGIO talks with co-author CHRIS BULL (intro/outro music from "Save Our Children/ Recruiter's Fight Song" by TOM WILSON-WEINBERG) ............. 7:35 CLOSING CREDITS/CONTINUITY ........................................................ 1:15 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME ........................................................................ 29:00 ----------------------Please note------------------------ Anyone with questions, suggestions, or NEWS stories is encouraged to email "T.W.O."
