purposely crashed his A-10 attack jet last month because he was about to be
outed as a gay man;  a U.S. Court of Appeals unanimously strikes down
Alabama's law prohibiting state support of lesbigay college groups;  the
former partner of a health worker in Florida is convicted in the case of last
year's distribution of the names of 4,000 PWA's -- the worst breach of
medical confidentiality in U.S. history;  Chevron Corporation becomes the
first major oil company to extend full spousal benefits to its unmarried
employees' domestic partners;  and Hawai'i's legislature settles on limited
benefits for same-gender couples and a voter referendum on marriage in 1998

when "Ellen Morgan" came out of the closet on her ABC-TV sitcom.  Real-life
lesbian Ellen DeGeneres was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey on her popular TV
talk show earlier that afternoon.  We have excerpts from both broadcasts,
along with JOHN McMULLEN's report from the special auditorium screening of
"Ellen" in Birmingham, Alabama, home of the only network affiliate refusing
to carry the show [w/comments by local residents Dawn McDaniel and Kathy
Ballou, GLAAD/D.C. staffer Cathy Renna and local satellite screening
organizer Kevin Snow];  CHRIS WILSON and PAM MARSHALL report from the "Ellen"
celebration in West Hollywood, California [w/comments by actor Patrick
