************************************************* THIS WAY OUT Program #463 02-10-97 ************************************************* Opening Teases/Theme Music/Intro Continuity ...................... 1:10 SEGMENT #1 - NewsWrap: United Airlines and the Catholic Church find ways to comply with San Francisco's domestic partners benefits policy, while a seemingly-frantic Hawai'i legislature, trying to beat an impending and probably pro-gay state Supreme Court ruling, considers 8 different bills dealing with the issue of same-gender marriage; French socialists introduce lesbigay domestic partners legislation in the National Assembly; an Australian court ruling granting lesbians equal access to artificial insemination has prompted both federal and Queensland state officials to move to deny lesbians all government-supported fertility services; meanwhile, Melbourne's second annual Pride March draws about 20,000 participants and 10,000 spectators; Gays & Lesbians of Zimbabwe issues a strong statement condemning governmental homophobia in neighboring Namibia; a lesbian mother in South Africa seeks judicial relief from harassment and physical assaults by her homophobic neighbors after local police fail to act; a gay man wins an $87,000 settlement from the Los Angeles Police Department arising from brutality he suffered during a peaceful 1991 gay rights protest; and a member of the 1970's-era disco group The Village People claims they aren't and never were ... [compiled and written by CINDY FRIEDMAN, with thanks to BRIAN NUNES, JASON LIN, MARTIN RICE, TOM RAMSEY, GRAHAM UNDERHILL, REX WOCKNER, RON BUCKMIRE, LUCIA CHAPPELLE & GREG GORDON, and anchored by CINDY FRIEDMAN and BRIAN NUNES] ....................................... 10:25 SEGMENT #2 - Billboard for Don Belton interview [:05] + Student activism has been a centerpiece of the pro-democracy movement in Burma since 1988. Earlier this month, the Burmese military regime announced the arrest of 20 dissidents affiliated with the All Burma Student Democratic Front. Those arrested were accused of distributing anti-government publications and other information "crimes" on behalf of the banned student group, most of whose members are in exhile in Thailand. One of those exhiled members organizing among the 70,000 refugees living along the Thai border is a young gay man, Aung Myo Min. Several months ago, reporter DEBBIE STOTHARD [from 2SER-FM/Sydney's "GayWaves" program] talked with him about the situation in his country, the relationship between gay rights and human rights, and why he feels so strongly about being "out" in the midst of a desperate struggle for democracy [6:05] ................................... 6:10 SEGMENT #3 - "TWO" I.D. by gay writer/performer Luis Alfaro and lesbian comic Monica Palacios (over instrumental intro music) [:15] + Several reviews of the popular book "Speak My Name: Black Men On Masculinity And The American Dream" [Beacon Press] praise its insightful and courageous content, but fail to mention that its editor, Don Belton, is an out black gay man. Belton's collection of autobiographical essays features some pieces by gay authors, including himself, but, as you'll hear in his conversation with This Way Out's JOSY CATOGGIO, issues of tenderness, sexuality, roles, and gender identity are tackled by writers representing a broad spectrum of perspectives. In this first of a 3-part series, Belton deplores the dearth of diverse African-American male images and discusses the stereotypical notions of masculinity (intro/outro music from "Real Men" by JOE JACKSON) ......... 8:40 CLOSING CREDITS/CONTINUITY ........................................................ 1:35 TOTAL PROGRAM TIME ........................................................................ 28:00 ----------------------Please note------------------------ Anyone with questions, suggestions, or NEWS stories is encouraged to email "T.W.O."
