country's second city (after Buenos Aires) to legally protect gays and
lesbians from discrimination, while the state of Colorado pays out almost a
million dollars for trying to prohibit those protections;  a Massachusetts
jury awards 1.2 million dollars to a man fired because of the perception that
he is gay;  activists meet with Israeli president Ezer Weizman in the wake of
his offensively- homophobic remarks during a late December nationally-
broadcast speech;  Australia has its first openly-lesbian legislator in
Western Australia Legislative Council member Liz Watson;  in Indiana, an
arson fire destroys the offices of Project AIDS Lafayette, while a fire of
indeterminate origin guts a popular lesbigay club in Superior Wisconsin;  a
Washington state appeals court okays a gay father's demonstration of
affection for his lover in front of his children, while a Denver, Colorado
judge dismisses a lawsuit challenging the city's spousal benefits package for
its gay and lesbian employees;  the Lesbian & Gay Bands of America have been
invited back to D.C. to play at Bill Clinton's second inaugural festivities;
 New Zealand's Triangle Television is granted a non-commercial UHF license
for its Auckland-based lesbigay broadcasts;  and 31 million people licked

SEGMENT #2 -  TWO's review of significant lesbigay news in 1996 focuses this
week on the queerest hot-button issue all year long: SAME-GENDER MARRIAGE.
 We'll review events "for" and "against" around the globe, including the U.S.
Congressional debate on "DOMA" -- the Defense Of Marriage Act -- and the
groundbreaking Hawai'i court decision in December ruling that the state had
not demonstrated a "compelling interest" to continue denying marriage
licenses to same-gender couples.  Among the voices heard: '96 Republican
presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, East London Anglican vicar Malcolm
Johnson, author/commentator Andrew Sullivan, Jill Butler of Britain's
Stonewall group, Candace (Newt's sister) Gingrich, San Francisco Mayor Willie
Brown, MCC Reverend Troy Perry, Jill Percy (she & her partner sued British
Rail for spousal travel discounts), the Lambda Legal Defense & Education
Fund's Evan Wolfson, the American Civil Liberties Union's Taylor Flynn,
Georgia Republican Representative Bob Barr, openly-gay Massachusetts
Democratic Representative Barney Frank, and Ninia Baehr (one of the lesbian
plaintiffs in the Hawai'i same-gender marriage case) [from original reports
